howard doddson, chief of new york's public libraries shaumberg center for research in black culture, ebony jackson, a blogger for hello negro, a website they say is for colored people who have experienced problems integrating, and ellis kohs, author and noted "newsweek" columnist. thanks very much, appreciate it. mr. doddson, let me start with you in terms of what i wanted to get out of this interview and that is we talk often about black history and celebrate it obviously in february but my contention was that outside of maybe about ten figures, many of us, including schoolchildren who are being taught history know very little about african-american history in this country. do you see that as people come through? >> absolutely. there's a general, i think maybe one of the unfortunate things that's happened as a result of black history month is it's been reduced to a discussion of a half dozen, maybe 20 black historic figures, and black history is obviously much, much more than that, and we have not begun to probe both the significance and character of that history, but also the impact that

in my household, my family didn't read books, my mama, we had the jet and the ebony, we read that. my daddy when he was around, read the paper every now and then. but there was no book, there was nothing in my book to associate between joy and reading. the only book i read by the time i got to college was "old man and the sea" and the time i read it, my mother discouraged me from reading the book because she thought it would be too much for me. freshman year, english class, i decided i wanted to be a journalist, because now i loved words, because of my issue with literacy, god wants me to be a writer, a journalist, i'm certain of it. well apparently the professor i had hadn't had that conversation with god and wasn't as convinced, so this professor, i failed his class the first trimester of school, i failed his english class. now in high school, i was a c student, d-c student, freshman sophomore year. i got my first a ever in school my junior year in high school and by the time i graduated, i was a solid b student. i got a d the first trimester of class. example of how slow i am, b

ebony trees and plants that were natural in haiti were taken out. in the attempt to grow rubber trees was started on large portions of land. there was some haitian scientist who said it would not work but the united states tried to experiment. today, one of the biggest problems in haiti is erosion. people are dependent on wood for homes and heating. this situation started by the united states for the war effort with the attempt to grow foreign seed that would not grow in that kind of topo graphy. when we look at the tremendous erosion in haiti today, the deping of it happened to be at the time when the united states felt it needed to have the growth of rubber trees in our hemisphere in a place that was close to the united states. and so once again, as we look at how haiti has impacted on the united states, this consequence of a negative development on the part of the u.s. government, i think once again is a reason why we should have strong passion for our sister country haiti. for our sister country haiti. we will continue in new jersey to continue
