makes a point that i think a good point about what the democrats are up to, but that strikes me as msnb christmas theater. they're trying to play to their base and trying to say look, we're trying so hard, trying so hard not to give those tax cuts for the millionaires and billionaires and gazillion airs, in the air they know, the president knows they've got to do this. how do you see this. >> it's posturing, a last minute attempt to provide coverage. i think what we actually saw this week is the white house, which has given no quarter on this issue until finally this last week, they've now appointed the small team to negotiate with republican lawmakers on some sort of a deal and you've seen the press secretary robert gibbs come out and outline where the president won't go, but none of that would actually keep a deal from happening that would extend all of the tax rates at least temporarily for people and you now even have the white house coming out to lay down what it would like to get in return for extending those tax cuts. >> that's a key point. because, matt, what do you think, the w

today on msnbs the former speaker announced she will run for re-election to serve a 20th term in the house of representatives. the 83-year-old said she is needed by san francisco. that the calls are for her to stay for another two-year term. she was first elected in congress in 19 87 and she made history as the first female house speaker a role she held twice. the decision to run again comes as democrats make a big push to regain control of the house. critics, though, including republicans, raised questions about her age and if it is time that she pass the baton to the next generation. >> i think the congress has more than their fair share of senior citizens on both sides of the aisle. i think it is time for new blood. she has been 30, what, 34, 35 years in congress now. i think it is time for somebody new to take over. >> senior congressional leaders include 81-year-old senate majority leader mitch mcconnell who recently suffered health issues and 90-year-old democratic senator dianne feinstein. both recently had episodes appearing forgetful or confused or freezing for several secon
