former representative barbara lee officially opened a campaign finance account today to run for mayor in april's special election. lee just left her seat in the house of representatives on friday after an unsuccessful run for senate. now, this comes after dozens of local officials and groups published an open letter encouraging lee to run for mayor. lee has been on oakland ballots for more than three decades, having first been elected to the california state assembly in 1990. but nothing is official. representative lee would only confirm that she will be making an announcement about her decision later this week. staying in oakland. that's where police are investigating a string of overnight burglaries, including three different safeways targeted by thieves in a 24 hour period. that includes two safeways, one on redwood below skyline avenue and the other on fruitvale avenue, about a mile away. this all follows a safeway break in early yesterday at the shopping center near broadway terrace. in that case, police say workers were in the store when it happened. thankfully, no one was hurt

and today, former congresswoman barbara lee did file paperwork in a first step toward a possible run for mayor of oakland. and the man at the center of a kidnaping case in vallejo that made national headlines is now facing new charges. matthew mueller is currently serving 40 years in federal prison for the 2015 kidnaping of denise huskins, in what came to be known as the gone girl case. well, just last week, new charges were brought accusing mueller of being involved in two assaults that date back 15 years. well, now tonight, mueller is facing even more charges for kidnaping and ransom crimes right near san ramon. ktvu crime reporter henry lee has the story. >> just a week ago, matthew mueller stood shackled in a san jose courtroom charged with committing two home invasions a month apart in mountain view and palo alto back in 2009. now, contra costa county prosecutors say they've charged mueller with kidnaping three victims for ransom near san ramon in 2015. they say he managed to get tens of thousands of dollars from them in exchange for their release. the victims had kept quiet all
