among the industrial stocks moving was 3m. earnings were much stronger than expected in its first quarter, coming in 14 cents ahead of estimates. fellow conglomerate united technologies also had a stronger forecast to start to the year, earning 11 cents per share more than expected. while united tech stock didn't move much, up just a fraction, 3m rallied more than 1,5%. and fellow manufacturer parker hannifan jumped almost 9% after a strong earnings report and increasing its financial guidance for the rest of the year. the tech sector was the biggest drag on the market before apple's earnings tonight. one reason was netflix. the company's latest forecast for subscriber growth was disappointing, and that led to stiff selling. shares fell hard, down 14%. volume quadrupled, with shares down to their lowest level since early january. we do have detailed analysis of the trading in netflix shares on our web site under the "blogs" tab at www.nbr.com. two very different retailers saw their shares prices moving in the same direction. f

earnings remain the key drivers as strength in blue ship names such as at&t and 3m helped set the tone. dow holding on to gains despite a retreat on the nasdaq as you just saw. much of that attributed to apple. it is now down ten of the past 111 trading sessions on apple. we know that it's coming off of a very strong base. it's nearly though at session lows ahead of the earnings due after the bell. we are all about apple tonight. just to give you an idea of the impact that apple is having on the broader market right now, investors are watching the power shares qqq, the etf which tracks the nasdaq 100. the option activity in the qqq hit the most bearish level in nearly five years, ahead of apple's earnings today. apple makes up nearly 20% of the index's weight. today's decline is showing you more signs of fear that could be associated with concern about apple's numbers. we're all waiting to see how business is going for apple and if, in fact, business is going to relate and actually go side by side with actually the valuation that we've been seeing in apple over the last couple of years

let's start with 3m. here is a company that has remained on top year after year and decade after decade, with a healthy dividend. today 3m reported a nice profit with some good growth. as many of the consumer markets are hurting, and asia had a driver disappointed and it still didn't matter. 3 m's markets can still raise their growth forecast for the future dramatically. that's called american ingenuity. how about ibm? i don't like the size of this, but you can only take so many animals in a given day. this is a classic american company. last week i told you that a decline would be excessive and you should buy it. today ibm boosted its dividend by 30%. it happened right at 9:30. it will boost the earnings and the earnings are what matters. the stock is an excellent buy, and more on that later. how about att, i cannot believe how much money this company can make. this is a small cap company, like panera bread or something. cell phones strong, land lines stable. a terrific yield and price appreciation, what

let me put the issue at hand for the 3m bank, what should it be doing in some sort of larger context. if we want this to work, we want to double exports in five years and then keep growing as a trading country and doing it in a way that is fair to our trading partners and helps them to grow their economies and to generate employment for their people -- because if you really look all over the world, the thing that people are crying for everywhere in the world is a decent job with a reliable income that allows people to support their families -- we have to start here with an economic policy that deals with our long-term fiscal challenges and still makes the necessary investments for a productive future. we have to produce competitive interest rates. they've been zero now, but when economic growth resumes vigorously, not just in america but everywhere, interest rates will not stay as low as they are and won't remain competitive if we don't have a long-term plan to reduce our debt. we need enough regulation to reduce financial crises, which include adequate capitalization requirements wit

that's how underperformers like proctor, 3m and j&j -- i mean, j&j, how many bad things can happen? the stock goes up. what does that tell you? these are quintessential weak-dollar stocks and we have a weaker dollar. with no bank run rumors out of europe, we were able to mount a solid bank stock rally led by citigroup with a good quarter. banks couldn't muster more of a move simply because we have a huge spanish ten year bond auction coming up thursday. so many people are betting that's got to go poorly, which would cause the banks to have another late down. but the consumer product stories couldn't have been stronger. the problem is this market doesn't have enough money to spread the wealth. when we get money in colgate, merck, pfizer, that has to come from somewhere. today it came from google and apple. how about this? a week ago these two stocks were in a footrace to $1,000. now they appear to be in a contest to see which can fall to $500 first. apple on the inside track having fallen pretty much in a straight line from $637 to $580. what's incredible to me about this apple decli
