at the business of 3m right now. they have a good predictable business across a very wide range of products. industrials are 30% of their revenues they make tapes and adhesives and health care and medical and surgical products. and remember those famous post-it notes, they're the guys who make that. let me tell you the bad news about the company. this isn't the tech company. so their organic growth guidance day 3 a to 4%. let me show you the charts for the year this thing was a monster going into the start of the year unfortunately the expect asians for wall street for growth were way too high the stock hit a high in january when the stock market hit a new high, and then they give guidance and lowered the guidance and the stock essentially has been straight down since then. this is great performer overall, great company but the street wants growth and it's hard for 3m to deliver the kind of growth that the momentum guys and the growth people want to deliver right now. that's the story but it's a perfectly respectable

>> it's interesting with 3m.'s one of the companies we look towards with the tariff issue. the idea they have grown sales in many of thafr regions is probably at least an optimistic sign that the stock is wavering in the premarket session when you get 16% sales growth and 7% in industrial, 5% in health care. all of these units are showing growth the question becomes whether or not there will be a long-term effect in tariffs. a good amount of their business comes from china we'll see if that pans out >> united technologies reported profit of $1.97 per share. that beat estimates of 11 cents. the company raised its full year outlook. some color, dom. >> this is all about whether we see higher demands for the airline services whether the parts and services starts to pan out a little bit that raised outlook is something that we'll watch they can raise that from $63.5 billion to $64.5 billion. that idea that they could boost their sales outlook perhaps giving a little bit of a bid to the stock even though it's come off

you can see that yesterday we had 3m come out, which is a dow component, perfectly respectable broadnformsment in the industrial space they talked about the organic growth of 3% to 4% that's perfectly respectable for that kind of space they're in and a well-run company, the stock is at a 52-week low because nobody wants to pay any kind of respectable multiple for 3% to 4% growth. they want more than that they want -- they want technology, which is what represents growth. so a great run company like 3m is a mess this year. 52-week low with the dow near historic highs >> so, anne, what should investors do in a market where things continue to kind of creep higher, if not power higher? and you're saying, no, valuation-wise, you're not comfortable with tech. is there a safer area, in particular do we go back to that stock picker's market cliche where if you like tech, you just get the microscope out looking closely >> it is a stock picker's market even within tech, we are still not avoiding it at all costs and certainly, we still like the investments we have there. and so we're not taking

here is what drove the dow. 3m. ge, caterpillar. most of these are industrials. they were adding 90 dow points. 90% of the rally. you can take away whatever stat you like, thank you, charlie brady our senior editor. a keen eye on apple now after the bell. we expect some big moves here. 3 1/2% move up or down as far as the options market. but this is key because the group overall, "fang" stocks moved into correction territory. this particular group has gotten hit hard. the questions are the things that gotten social media, versus things with product. apple would be one of them. we're watching for a trillion dollar mark. if apple costs 203.45 it will be the first trillion dollar company ever. here is the look at the dow, s&p and nasdaq all had winning month of july. in fact the dow and the s&p, best month since january. so it hasn't been, though there has been volatility, we end up with gains. back to you guys. melissa: nicole, thank you. david: today's market panel, gary kaltbaum, kaltbaum capital management. lenore hawkins from thematica research. >> thematica. h

led by boeing, 3m, travelers. on the downside we saw facebook tumbling. the profit margins. daily active users, monthly active users, ad rates, guidance. it went from record high yesterday to near bear market territory as we close here at 176. 174 would have been the bear market territory. on the other hand airlines did jump higher. this entire group did very well. american airlines itself, up 4.7 and that is because of the return to revenue growth for next year. that forecast gave a boost but the facebook story is pretty unbelievable. it goes around the globe. not only facebook, but so many etfs. as i noted the biggest loss ever for a single company. back to you. adam: big loss. people expect this company will recover. they still have growth, don't they, nicole? >> i talk to multiple analysts. i have to say there is a mixed bag. a lot of people are outraged. they can't trust management. they were misguided on everything from privacy having minimal impact to also advertising dollars. and there are others who still came to me and said the fundamentals still look really good.

last week's constructive talk with the europeans made it possible the rumor has credence the up stock, 3mcaterpillar, emerson, honeywell, united technologies all beaten down despite excellent quarters, saw their stocks come roaring back some are simply coiled springs like that of collar, with a stock that wilted yesterday after a really good quarter. others like boeing are back in the bull camp after last week's down do either of these tech or industrial moves have staying power? both are a little tenuous. facebook has come down to a level that presumes the deceleration will continue for next year. that's the only way to explain the stock's country valuation. if i were an analyst, i would contact my trading desk and ask whether there are finally enough buyers underneath to let us downgrade the stock from buy to hold there are so many analysts who haven't done that yet without crushing the stock as long as the rest of tech is trading with facebook, it's going to be precarious but if tech trades up with the greatest consumer product story ever told, that of apple, well, that's a different s

companies from 3m, jpmorgan, walmart. tell me what your thought is having within a former ge executive, how do you suppose these ceos will get the word out and get prospective job applicants to start training? >> it's an important topic, that's for sure. retraining was the part that i honed in on and i think one of your commentators talked about automation and its impact. there was a study done two or three years ago on manufacturing jobs which, of course, when you talk about china, front and center. and basically, it looked at productivity's effect on those jobs, automation. if we had the same productivity in 2010 as we had in the year 2000, we wouldn't have just 12 million manufacturing jobs, we'd have 21 million manufacturing jobs. in other words, automation had taken out 9 million of those jobs. that's why retraining is so important, and it's why something that has to be in the arsenal of things to do. when we think about china and main maintaining u.s. competitiveness and our own economic strength. liz: well, the job

let's take a look at some movers taking the industrial sector higher including caterpillar, 3m, ge, alonghe industrial stocks. thattors feeling hopeful if the trade war between the u.s. and china can dissipate, perhaps it will create a bullish spark for some industrial companies. if we take a look at the index here are the industrial movers. it can see the rally i was mentioning, hopes that a trade work would be alleviated. the trade on the day has been bumpy but to the upside after three big down days, the worst in three days, in february of 2016, we started higher, then lower, higher, and i should mention this is not the true trade. this is also apple among other movers. we see at this point up .7%. the big one coming up after the bell, at 4:30 as scarlet was mentioning, apple. this was over the last month. july has been kind to apple as well, gaining and gaining, higher. three things investors will clearly be focused onto a revenue growth, looking for more than 15% year-over-year, and the second is iphones. very interesting. the second quarter with tech companies beating, and then some

nice beat. 3m, good numbers although they did lower the top end of the guidance. i think this hurt them a little bit. verizon beat on better wireless subscriber growth. other earnings out there, alphabet took a $5 billion charge that really messed with their earnings growth was tremendous. that stock is up avery dennison, they do all of the stick-maems that are out there, and some of the stuff that's related to various office supplies they raised their full year guidance to talk about the strengthening of the dollar. a lot of companies talked about strengthening of the dollar. higher than expected costs kimberly-clark did they're up whirlpool said they were weaker in europe, and you see that down rather notably we have a few market headwinds coming in here in the middle of earnings season. generally good, but the high ers rates, there's a rising dollar, and some people are referencing tariffs or higher costs in general. particularly when you are dealing with commodity costs energy is up about 1% today. not independent of the earnings. i just say very nice moves he
