but it is a big deal. one of the things i talk a lot about on the campaign, making sure that we do fund our public safety departments. we have to make some tough decisions this year, but to me, one of the biggest priorities is making sure that we have our police and firefighters and sheriffs' offices and their budgets fully funded so that we can ensure that public safety does not lag during these budget times. again, in district 2, i do not think it is talked about as much. we are fortunate that we do not have a lot of homicides. we do not have a lot of those types of serious crimes. but the crimes that to happen to matter to the people in district two. so as a local supervisor, it is incumbent upon me, and i take it very seriously to pay attention and make sure we engage with the police and fire department said they are aware of exactly what is happening, but again, i have to tell you that i think we are very lucky with the police infrastructure we have an firefighter infrastructure we have and the office

traffic issues are always a big concern for us in the district. aside from that, we also know that there really does need to be more improvements in the muni system. we are served primarily by a few rail lines and bus lines, and much like other districts who have been impacted by different service changes across the years, we have seen, for example, early turn back in our district, and we are working to resolve that issue. for many people, being let out at sunset boulevard is simply not acceptable when you have many more blocks to go before the end of the line. there is definitely big rooms for improvement with transportation in our district. >> what about crime in your district? how do you think the police department is doing, and how do you think the city is doing in general with respect to crime? supervisor chu: i know we have been acting chief at this moment and the police commission is working to try to find an individual who can step in and lead the department. we know there are many things going in the right direction with the police departm

that is a big one. e was a two-unit building where a tax was built -- a deck was built without a permit to be used as a recreational deck, but on the building plans that were approved by the department of building inspection, there were the -- there was the deck shown. the railings on the plan around the surface of this roof deck -- there was a staircase to get up to this, but there was no -- so we had a problem because the building inspection that was done for the sale of the property by the buyer indicated that, well, this cannot be permitted roof deck. in digging around a little bit more, we found that to be true. this is a two-unit building that the buyer intended to apply for a condominium conversion that some point in the near future. that was a big deal for them. what they found out in their search was they would have to remove what was there or find a way to add a second means of egress. that was a $10,000 problem. >> i think any to chip in your. things have changed about second means of redress

>> i think that's a big factor, tom. we created about 100,000 private payroll jobs a month last year, and in the last two months now, we've created on average, 235,000 a month. i think we've had a definite upward ratcheting of job creation, maybe a doubling of its rate of creation here in the last several months. i think we're going to stay at this higher level of 200,000 a month-plus, and if we do, that's going to really do good things for the consumer, for income trends, for retail sales, for business confidence about their sales trends. i think that will be a big factor helping the stock market and the economy as we go through the rest year. >> tom: sounds bullish. there have been a lot of reports on the drop in the dollar. does that drop worry you? >> well, it's certainly got inflationary overtones, and we're certainly witnessing that with watching what commodity prices are doing, oil, and prices at the pump. put it also does something really good, and i think that weak dollar with a lag is likely to improve our trade
