newt gingrich made a mistake by attacking chris wallace over a question that was not only an appropriate question but a necessary question. you have to ask newt gingrich why his campaign impleaded. it's clearly a legitimate question. he looked silly and foolish whining about it. on the other hand if you look at his answer on the economy and getting tough legislation through a bipartisan congress, it was easily -- easily the best answer on the stage. i think it was true of the immigration answer and later what he called the stupid debt committee, he not only gave an answer that i thought would appeal to republican primary voters in its tone and skepticism about this setup, but also, made a substantive critique of the debt committee that i think was right on the mark, so overall, if you look at his substantive answers, i think newt gingrich had the best night. the problem for republicans is, he's not going to be president. bill: does last night sift any of the eight out of the poll? >> probably not. if there is that kind of sifting, it will come after the straw poll tomorrow. i don't think

to analyzing that debate think he had a very good debate in part because he went after us and the questions. but arguably, defending the questions, one, chris wallace was asking about how he runs his campaign, if he's going the run the country, that's a fair country about how you run your campaign. two, on the libya question he did say those things, and the question was are you certain about the way forward now. after the debate he thought he had a pretty good debate, and if you look at it, i think it was pretty interesting across the two hours and substantive despite all the focus and the coverage on the back and forth and the process and the questions. megyn: you know, i had to laugh because in the law, when i used to practice law they used to tell you you can beat up on a witness if witness is unsympathetic. so when i saw him beating up on chris wallace, i thought, oh, that's okay, no one's going to feel bad for chris wallace. but when i saw him beating up on you, bret baier, i thought it differently. >> reporter: well, thanks, buddy.
