warriors fans cheered for aaron hern at the play-off game. he was invited to watch the game against denver. he spent more than a week in the hospital in boston. he and his family returned home earlier this week. aaron hern still has a long way to go for a full recovery since being injured in the explosions. but he took one major step toward healing and that is returning home. kpix 5's cate caugiran spoke to his parents about the long road ahead. >> reporter: the parents of the young martinez boy injured in the boston bombing attacks spoke about their son's road to recovery. >> he is a pretty tough kid. of anybody that could handle something like this, he has the right kind of makeup to do it. >> reporter: aaron's leg was hit by shrapnel at the boston marathon finish line cheering on his mother at the end of the race. he had two operations and was released from the hospital last week. since then, his family together has been dealing with the aftermath which his mother says has been the hardest part for him. >> these are visions and memories th

aaron is a third generation 4* from martinez. and they str truly rallied -- they have truly rallied around the family. to say the city of martinez was happy to have the hern family home tonight would be an understatement. they arrived from boston just today. >> they are tired. it isely absolutely gracious for all of the support they have gotten, but they need to rest. they want to keep it low key. >> it has been a whirlwind. aaron was in a crowd of people cheering on his mom who was running the marathon when the bombs went off. the 11-year-old was hit in the leg. he underwent two surming res in boston -- surgeries in boston. >> it is great to see he is back and helped in his way. >> the road to recovery is a long one. he has nearly 100 staples in his leg. his baseball coach knows he will bounce back. >> him being an athlete knows that there is nothing like being in your own bed. and being with family and friends again i'm sure that is great for him. >> it is not clear when he will return to classes at martinez junior high school.

aaron hearn now finally back home. today he's celebrating his 12th birthday. happy birthday, my man. "today in the bay's" christie smith has more on the story. >> reporter: there are so many people here in martinez following aaron hearn's progress, wishing him well, a number of restaurants and businesses held fund-raisers for the family during this ordeal. as you said, he did make it home just in time for his 12th birthday which is today. there is a note on the family door this morning to their home telling the media that he's doing well. they're trying to find peaceful family time and they plan to speak with the media on thursday afternoon. respecting their privacy and staying back just a little bit this morning. there's also a welcome home sign on the garage door this morning. it looks like it was signed by a number of his friends. hearn was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the boston marathon bombing and had two surgeries on his leg, even visiting the site of the bombing before coming back home to the bay area. he was there with his family to watch his mom kat
