trained on east san jose. a significant fire. this is in the evergreen area part of san jose off of 680. we're not quite sure exactly how this started. early reports are it started as a grass fire, but you can see that dark plume of smoke there. fire crews are on site right now. once again, this is a fire in east san jose in the evergreen area. we'll continue to follow this fire throughout the newscast and give you updates as warranted. >>> typhoid fever, even the name sounds scary. now some shoppers who ate at the nordstrom cafe any stonestown shopping center are learning they may have been exposed. it is rare and can be dangerous. we're live at stonestown with what health experts are advising. >> reporter: good evening, jessica. they're advertising that people go to the doctor if they think they may have contracted this. now, it appears a line cook at the stonestown nordstrom cafe was infected during a recent trip overseas, then brought the typhoid fever home and here to work and now anyone who ate there during the last five days the cook worked here may have been infected. it's the first time a food handler has been infected with typhoid fever in san francisco. >> that's kind of shocking. >> reporter: leaving customers of this cafe feeling a bit uneasy. >> i think i ate here last week. coy have eaten here the week before as well. >> reporter: those are the weeks to watch out for. the line work worked here april 16, 17, 18, 20, and 27. anyone who ate at this nordstrom cafe those days may have been infected by typhoid fever tp symptoms don't show up for an average of two weeks. they range from high fever to stomach pains, headache, and nausea and lack of appetite. >> most people do not progress to very serious illness although in some cases some people can become very sick without treatment. >> dr. susan phillip with the san francisco department of public health says the cook likely got infected the way most do in the u.s., after a recent international trip. a nordstrom spokesperson says the company was notified by the health department last night and is trying to compile credit card information of customers who visited on those specified days to notify them they are at risk. while some took the news lightly -- >> i stay home and lose weight. >> reporter: most nordstrom cafe customers we spoke to were stressing restaurants must encourage a culture of food safety and send workers home at the first sign they're sick. >> if people are sick, they shouldn't be going to work. >> in this environment you have to be very careful because the public is at risk. >> reporter: now, nordstrom says it will pay for the medical costs for any of the customers who were infected with typhoid fever while eating here at nordstrom cafe. it's also contagious and the bacteria is spread through fecal matter or bug bites. today as you heard largely it's a third world problem rare in the u.s. during the civil war though, body lice helped spread typhoid killing more than 29,000 union soldiers, sickening twice that number. in 1884 it keeled teen leland stanford, jr. founding his patients to found stanford university. there are just a few u.s. cases a year. >>> she admitted it. a morgan hill preschool teacher could get jail time after pleading no contest to putting sleeping pills in toddlers sippy gups. 59-year-old debra gratz of holster faces up to three months in jail for each of the five misdemeanor counts of attempted child endangerment. as part of the settlement deal, the court dismissed five counts of assault. she had worked at the kiddie academy since 2007. back in march another employee saw her put something into the children's water cups. they were confiscated before the children drank from them. police say gratz admitted to putting an over the counter sleep medication or sleep aid in the children's drinks to make them take longer naps. >>> in san francisco now, how did this happen? investigators are trying to find out what caused the van to crash into a home today. this was in the twin peaks neighborhood this morning. a van with three people inside had gone over the cliff. one person in the van was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. no one inside the home was home at the time. >>> another look at that breaking news we told you just a few minutes ago. this is the fire in san jose in the evergreen area. you can see that the fire, the plume of smoke has gotten bigger. we have a couple little updates for you. initially it started as a grass fire. you're looking at a live picture. at this point we don't know if it spread to a building but we are hearing now that this fire is directly across from the east ridge mall. that's what we're hearing at this point. we don't know what kind of a building is involved or what's burning. but, again, this is right off of 680 in the evergreen area of san jose. we're keeping a close watch on it, and we are trying to get you more information but this is an area you may want to be avoiding. very hot right now, lots of wind. this is enabling a lot of these fires we're seeing breaking out in the bay area and also in los angeles as well. >> table. we are getting ready for that festival which will be saturday and sunday. it brings out over 100,000 people. it's absolutely free in downtown livermore and there's a lot to do besides wine. our traffic cameras. no report on how many fire crews are on the way but we'll continue to monitor the situation. obviously in east san jose and throughout san jose you will be getting a lot of smoke. black and gray. you can't really see too much. only one fire truck sup there right now it looks like. i don't know if more are coming up there. >> and so when you say it's in an empty lot, did you get a l k look -- how close were you? >> it looked like a lot of dry grass. i don't know if someone set it or a plane crashed because the airport is really close to there is i don't know what happened. a lot of dry grass engulfed right now. you can see it spreading quickly. the sky is engulfed in black and gray clouds. >> the airport you're talking about is the reed hillview airport which is north of that location. this did come in initially as a grass fire, so at this point we're hoping that it's just maintained to a grass fire. you're saying you're only seeing one fire truck out there but it is very, very heavy smoke. were you in the area? can you breathe the smoke? >> yeah, you can breathe it, and it looks like it's going down a little bit now. might be starting to burn out now, but it's not as bright as it was a little while ago. >> manuel, can you tell if traffic is being affected at this point? it's pretty close to the east ridge mall. >> it's going a little slow. it's not terrible
