aaron hern turns 12 years old today. he's recovering from several injuries on his leg after he was seriously hurt in the april 15th explosions. doctors expect aaron to make a full recovery. his friends say all aaron wanted for his birthday was to be out of the hospital and at home in martinez, so his wish has been granted. >> happening right now, strong winds making it extremely difficult for crews to contain two wildfires going on. the first major outbreak so far in the bay area this season. nbc bay area's kristi smith joining us live from napa county with the latest on this story. kristi, good morning. >> good morning, jon. sometimes you can smell smoke in the air when the wind blows. that's what conditions are like. it is hot, dry, windy. firefighters dealing with a number of fires burning in wine country. i want to show you what it's like. this is what the hills are like. this is the kind of stuff that's burning. can you hear it crunch, just completely dry. they are concerned about a number of fires specifically, too. they tell me so far one home suffered damage in another outbuilding a barn was burned. in all, four fires burning overnight. f

hern thanked local restaurants, businesses, sports teams that supported the family throughout this. they say aaron is improving after suffering a large shrapnel wound to the leg. after the blast katherine got separated from aaron and his dad. she calls it the longest two hours of his life. aaron visited the site before he left boston. he was watching his mom run. he came home after two surgeries just in time for his 12th birthday. he received visits from two oakland a's players and even first lady michelle obama stopped by. the family says he still sees his doctors very often in the bay area. some of the staples are out of his legs but his ear is damaged and he has hearing loss from the bomb. of course, three people died, dozens more injured. hern's family said in the hospital they learned exactly how much he saw as well. >> these are visions and memories that we'll never be able to erase for him. we've always tried to raise both our kids with a certain level of resiliency knowing -- we never tried to shield them from the bad things we know are out there. we never imagined them happening to us. >> reporter: last night aaron and his family were special guesses of the warriors at oracle arena. an exciting game a

aaron hern at the play-off game. he was invited to watch the game against denver. he spent more than a week in the hospital in boston. he and his family returned home earlier this week. aaron hern still has a long way to go for a full recovery since being injured in the explosions. but he took one major step toward healing and that is returning home. kpix 5's cate caugiran spoke to his parents about the long road ahead. >> reporter: the parents of the young martinez boy injured in the boston bombing attacks spoke about their son's road to recovery. >> he is a pretty tough kid. of anybody that could handle something like this, he has the right kind of makeup to do it. >> reporter: aaron's leg was hit by shrapnel at the boston marathon finish line cheering on his mother at the end of the race. he had two operations and was released from the hospital last week. since then, his family together has been dealing with the aftermath which his mother says has been the hardest part for him. >> these are visions and memories that will never be able to be erased for him. at the end of it there's things we won't be able to heal for him. >> reporter: his parents say there's still a long way for him to go. he just had 86 staples removed from his leg and it will be 16 weeks before he can gain full mobility. >> after a while you get drained and exhausted by the whole ordeal that when they were finally caught, i was surprised and catherine and i talked about it. we had almost no reaction to it. >> reporter: now it's about family, working and healing together. catherine hern thanked the community for help and prayers and gave a plea for parents. >> take your kids, all of your children,

newscast and give you updates as warranted. >>> typhoid fever, even the name sounds scary. now some shoppers who ate at the nordstrom cafe any stonestown shopping center are learning they may have been exposed. it is rare and can be dangerous. we're live at stonestown with what health experts are advising. >> reporter: good evening, jessica. they're advertising that people go to the doctor if they think they may have contracted this. now, it appears a line cook at the stonestown nordstrom cafe was infected during a recent trip overseas, then brought the typhoid fever home and here to work and now anyone who ate there during the last five days the cook worked here may have been infected. it's the first time a food handler has been infected with typhoid fever in san francisco. >> that's kind of shocking. >> reporter: leaving customers of this cafe feeling a bit uneasy. >> i think i ate here last week. coy have eaten here the week before as well. >> reporter: those are the weeks to watch out for. the line work worked here april 16, 17, 18, 20, and 27. anyone who ate at this nordstrom cafe those days may have been infected by typhoid fever tp symptoms don't show up for an average of two weeks. they range from high fever to stomach pains, headache, and nausea and lack of appetite. >> most people do not progress to very serious illness although in some cases some people can become very sick without treatment. >> dr. susan phillip with the san francisco department of public health says the cook likely got infected the way most do in the u.s., after a recent international trip. a nordstrom spokesperson says the company was notified by the health department last night and is trying to compile credit card information of customers who visited on those specified days to notify them they are at risk. while some took the news lightly -- >> i stay home and lose weight. >> reporter: most nordstrom cafe customers we spoke to were stressing restaurants must encourage a culture of food safety and send workers home at the first sign they're sick. >> if people are sick, they shouldn't be going to work. >> in this environment you have to be very careful because the public is at risk. >> reporter: now, nordstrom says it will pay for the medical costs for any of the customers who were infected with typhoid fever while eating here at nordstrom cafe. it's also cases a year. >>> she admitted it. a morgan hill preschool teacher could get jail time after pleading no contest to putting sleeping pills in toddlers sippy gups. 59-year-old debra gratz of holster faces up to three months in jail for each of the five misdemeanor counts of attempted child endangerment. as part of the settlement deal, the court dismissed five counts of assault. she had worked at the kiddie academy since 2007. back in march another employee saw her put something into the children's water cups. they were confiscated before the children drank from them. police say gratz admitted to putting an over the counter sleep medication or sleep aid in the children's drinks to make them take longer naps. >>> in san francisco now, how did this happen? investigators are trying to find out what caused the van to crash into a home today. this was in the twin peaks neighborhood this morning. a van with three people inside had gone over the cliff. one person in the van was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. no one inside the home was home at the time. >>> another look at that breaking news we told you just a few minutes ago. this is the fire in san jose in the evergreen area. you can see that the fire, the plume of smoke has gotten bigger. we have a couple little updates for you. initially it started as a grass fire. you're looking at a live picture. at this point we don't know if it spread to a building but we are hearing now that this fire is directly across from the east ridge mall. that's what we're hearing at this point. we don't know what kind of a building is involved or what's burning. but, again, this is right off of 680 in the evergreen area of san jose. we're keeping a close watch on it, and we are trying to get you more information but this is an area you may want to be avoiding. very hot right now, lots of wind. this is enabling a lot of these fires we're seeing breaking out in the bay area and also in los angeles as well. >> especially in wine country and now in east san jose. it's across from east ridge mall in east san jose. this fire, we'll continue to monitor throughout the newscast. >>> we're also talking about a lot of community activity this is weekend and one of the big ses in livermore. >> jeff ranieri is live at the 22nd annual wine country festival and it is toasty out there today, jeff. >> reporter: yeah, it is definitely hot. temperatures near 100, and, of course, that high fire danger as you guys talked about. as we transition to the livermore wine country festival, take a look at all the wine on the table. we are getting ready for that festival which will be saturday and sunday. it brings out over 100,000 people. it's absolutely free in downtown livermore and there's a lot to do besides wine. also plenty of shopping. want to bring in john concanon with concanon wineries. napa and sonoma is known for wine but livermore has been for many decades. >> absolutely. my great grandfather founded our winery in 1883. there's over 50 wineries. livermore is the original wine country in california. we've made a lot of great contributions to the wine industry from here. >> reporter: a lot of people our traffic cameras. no report on how many fire crews are on the way but we'll continue to monitor the situation. obviously in east san jose and throughout san jose you will be getting a lot of smoke. very close to king and tully. it's been burning for 30 minutes or so. manuel, i understand you have been by the fire. what can you tell us? >> it's in an empty lot, like -- fire engulfed there. sky is black and gray. you can't really see too much. only one fire truck sup there right now it looks like. i don't know if more are coming up there. >> and so when you say it's in an empty lot, did you get a l k look -- how close were you? >> it looked like a lot of dry grass. i don't know if someone set it or a plane crashed because the airport is really close to there is i don't know what happened. a lot of dry grass engulfed right now. you can see it spreading quickly. the sky is engulfed in black and gray clouds. >> the airport you're talking about is the reed hillview airport which is north of that location. this did come in initially as a grass fire, so at this point we're hoping that it's just maintained to a grass fire. you're saying you're only seeing one fire truck out there but it is very, very heavy smoke. were you in the area? can you breathe the smoke? >> yeah, you can breathe it, and it looks like it's going down a little bit now. might be starting to burn out now, but it's not as bright as it was a little while ago. >> manuel, can you tell if traffic is being affected at this point? it's pretty close to the east ridge mall. >> it's going a little slow. it's not terrible right now but it's slowing down a little bit. everyone is the trying to see through all that smoke right now. >> at this point it doesn't seem like any other buildings near it are in danger? >> that's hard to say. it's pretty close to some other businesses that are close to there. i know there's a storage unit area that's really close by to there. i don't know if it's going to spread that far or
