joining us now, senior fellow at the egie endowment for international peace aaron david miller, and aymann. aaron, why should america care about syria? >> i mean, if i were providing the president-elect with counsel, aside from the moral and ethical reasons, i would argue basically that isis can easily make a resurgence as it is in the central desert. and it's critically important for not just syria but for the region as a whole that the united states maintain a measured support. we cannot redeem syria, we cannot fix syria. the syrians are showing for the first time a degree of agency. less incumbered by external powers even though some are continuing to use influence. we have an extraordinary moment here. to walk away from this, i think, would be a fundamental mistake, and it won't take an extraordinary investment. syria's broke. we're not going to fund it, and we shouldn't fund it. but the gulf can, europe can. but the americans have a unique role to play. those are the talking points that i would use. i doubt if they're going to resonate. >> ayman, you have seen this play out before. y

i spoke with aaron david miller, seniorfellow at the carnegie endowment for international peace, aboutsyrians in these celebrations, almost pleading with the world to leave them alone, we heard one man saying don't interfere with our decisions but obviously, syria has long been a country where we have seen these multiple players taking part there. how do you see this? will syria be able to chart its own course? you know, it's an extraordinary moment. i don't like to describe this as an inflection point, a game changer, a seachange or a watershed. i think if you look at the previous examples where arab authoritarians were overthrown, without exception the outcome was worse. mubarak was overthrown and abdel fattah al—sisi rules the country with an iron hand. gaddafi was overthrown and libya is divided. houthis controlled part of the country. saddam hussein was overthrown in iraq and iraq is still a dysfunctional country. then you have tunisia, where the sprouts of democracy took root and yet, when ben ali was overthrown, the country now is run by an autocrat. will syria be an exception?

i want to introduce aaron david miller from the international piece. your take on syria's new leadership. you know? we have a new group rolling in, making these promises, then didn't hold them up. you know? he is meeting with officials, he is wearing suits. he is saying all the right things. is it possible they could pull off a functional government, or is it too soon to tell? >> you know, it's a fascinating question. thanks for having me. there is no precedent when they are overthrown, egypt, tunisia, or some person on one hand, or chaotic dysfunction and division. it could be like yemen, libya, or even in iraq. it's going to be a very heavy list -- lift. this movement is highly decentralized with authoritarian tendencies. govern a country that is multi conventional, multiethnic that has high expectations for a transparent participatory form of government that benefits the syrian people who have suffered so extraordinarily after five decades of rule of the asad family. at this stage, no past, no a, b, c, i think we have to wait to see if -- who wants
