aaron gilchrist is here with the latest developments now. aaron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we've gotten breaking news into the newsroom about a bombing, explosion in afghanistan in kandahar. this apparently happened 600 yards from where an afghan government delegation is investigating the shootings that happened this past weekend. that group was actually meeting to go over what they had gathered. one person was killed. no one in the delegation, as we understand it at this point, was wounded or killed. we'll have more information as that comes in to our newsroom this morning. >>> now to secretary panetta's trip, apparently planned before that american soldier was accused of shooting more than a dozen women and children. secretary panetta is there to meet with troops, commanders and the afghan president. we just got this image of the secretary landing at camp in afghanistan. apparently the unannounced visit had been in the planning stages for several weeks. panetta will speak to a gathering of 200 troops today and meet wit

"news 4's" aaron gilchrist is live in our newsroom with the breaking developments. good morning. >> there were some reports that the shooting suspect might have committed suicide. now french officials say there are no signs of life coming from that apartment this morning. the french interior minister said early willer the suspect wanted to, quote, die with weapons in his hands. i want to go to some live pictures now from toulouse. 32 hours into this standoff, our teams there have reported seeing stretchers being taken to the scene. you saw it in some of the video. this is after two shots were heard in the middle of the night. there are reports that police and medics are prepping to go inside that apartment where mohammed merah has been hold up. some 300 officers on the scene. some of the vehicles have been moved around the perimeter of this area. some activity happening right now. while you were sleeping police set off several loud explosions in an effort to put pressure on him. we're told a few hours behalf that, merah apparently cut off negotiations with police an

aaron gilchrist has the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: we're still getting new information about this. details a bit sketchy on the explosion. reports out of afghanistan say a bomb loaded on a motorcycle went off today. one person was killed in the blast. we just learned that was an afghan intelligence officer. three other people were hurt. this is all according to witnesses and emergency room doctors. officials saying a little about this in afghanistan. this happened in kandahar, about 600 yards from where the afghan delegation investigating sunday's shooting rampage was holding a meeting. no one in the group was hurt. at the same time, defense secretary leon panetta talking to troops in afghanistan this hour. we got this image of the secretary landing at camp bastion in afghanistan. apparently this unannounced visit had been in the planning phases for several weeks, long before a u.s. army staff sergeant was accused of shooting 16 civilians to death. on this trip, panetta is scheduled to meet with president ha

aaron gilchrist with more. >>> the situation still very much involving there in toulouse after a heavily armed police raid at a home there early this morning. we're also learning more about the shooter's motivations in killing seven people. first, i want to show you live pictures we're just getting from the scene now. this is actually on the edge of the area that is cordoned off there in toulouse. some 300 police officers, negotiators, on the scene right now working this incident. when they raided that home this morning, officers were met with heavy gunfire from that suspect. three officers were wounded. we're told not seriously. they did arrest the suspect's brother. now in just the last few minutes, the french interior minister told reporters that the suspect is 24 years old and has thrown his gun out of a window. he says he will turn himself in sometime this afternoon. that one gun that came out the window was -- he says sort of a sign that he's willing to negotiate. but we're told he does have other automatic weapons in the house with him. the suspect accused in three separate incide

aaron gilchrist is at the news4 superscreen with more. aaron?rter: it's an annual ritualal, but doctors say changg the body's regular rhythm even by an hour can have serious impacts on how we function. now one of the big concerns today -- falling asleep while driving. that's something you got to watch for. aaa says the week after the clock springs ahead, there is an 8% increase in traic accidents. sleepde sleep deprivation was a cause of one in six crashes the day after daylight saving. and there are health concerns including an increase in workplace accidents. doctors say today and tomorrow there is a 10% upnick heart attacks that are reported. now the opposite is true when falling back in october when the risk decreases by 10%. last but not least, a penn state researcher, professor there, says today you are more likely to cyber-loaf. you and i would call that surfing the web at work. that's because of the increased fatigue. it leads to massive productivity loss, we're told. sleep specialists say that it takes about five days for our bodies to

aaron gilchrist is here with more. >> the fbi and u.s. attorney's office are opening an investigation into what led to trayvon martin's death. this story, getting national attention and cries of racial injustice in some cases. police say that martin, a 17-year-old black kid, walking through a gated community in sanford, florida, last month, as he returned from a convenience storm. 27-year-old george zimmerman called police, saying that martin looked suspicious. and zimmerman shot martin, he says in self-defense. zimmerman's family says that the shooting was not racially motivated. >> that was may baby, and he was pleading for his life. i don't understand how that is self-defense. >> george is a very congenial, amiable meeting. he never showed up in camouflage, looking like rambo. >> there has been a public outcry and building movement on social media. college students, including students from howard university have protested and civil rights leaders headed to florida for a town meeting that will happen tonight. the justice department says

aaron gilchrist is here with news. aaron. >> he claims he was attack and beaten during the confrontation with tavon martin last month. if you watch the tape, zimmerman doesn't appear to be hurt at all. sanford police have confirmed this is george zimmerman. it shows him in handcuffs being removed from a police cruiser, he's patted down. he was then led down a series of hallways inside the police department there. the 28-year-old's face and head pretty visible during this whole time, and he appears to be uninjured. now, if you'll remember, zim eman's attorney said trayvon martin broke his client's nose and smashed his head into the ground several times. >> america is watching that video and they're listening to those 911 -- >> that was the attorney for the trayvon martin family basically saying that the video shows that george zimmerman was not bleeding from his head, his nose did not appear to be broken. now, zimmerman has maintained he shot trayvon martin in self-defense during a struggle while he was on patrol -- neig

. >> news4's aaron gilchrist has joined us to explain that. aaron?ter: the young man's name is jorge steven acunia. a 19-year-old college student. last wednesday immigration agents took him and his family into custody. since then his friends created a stirring youtube video to win supporters. this video is designed to get jorge's story out there to rally people to advocate for him and his family. jorge same to the u.s. at 8 years old with his mother and father in from colombia. they trayed to get political asylum but were denied. they ignored an order to leave in 2008 and have been in the country illegally ever since. but on a facebook page and in a letter from the montgomery county council supporters highlight that jorge was an honors student at northwest high school and is a semester away from graduating from montgomery county college. the entire county council urging the white house and the department of homeland security now to step in and to stop the family's pending deportation. in their letter, the council cites a similar situation in florida

aaron gilchrist is here now with all of the overnight developments. good morning. >> good morning, joe. the latest signs are this standoff could end pretty violently. they say the suspect wants to, quote, die with weapons in his hands. we're keeping a close eye on live pictures from toulouse right now. we're 30-plus hours into the standoff. as we look at the live pictures, there's been a flurry of movement in the last couple of minutes. it seems to have slowed off. some 300 officers have had their sights set on an apartment where he is holed up. overnight there were several loud explosions. police set them off in an effort to keep pressure on the suspect bleebed to be 24-year-old mohammed mer rah. he cut off negotiations with police and he's apparently admitted to killing a rabbi and three children at a jewish school as well as three french soldiers laugh week. there are some suspicions being reported that merah may have committed suicide already. he claimed the killings were retaliation for how palestinian children were treated in the middle east and

. >> i'm aaron gilchrist if for joe krebs, friday, march 9. a lot going on.e begin with breaking news. a police shoot-out on the d.c./maryland line. it happened at eastern and georgia avenues. tracee wilkins, bring us up to speed. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. first of all, let me say that on my left we have d.c. police. we're going to focus on what's happening on my right with montgomery county police who just a few minutes were out here looking for evidence and are still maintaining the scene. this is literally on the line. and in fact, several calls came from both d.c. and montgomery county reporting shots fired. that's what brought police to the scene. let me show you what it looked like a while ago. as police approached the scene, they could actually hear gunshots. now when they arrived, there was a lone gunman who was firing his gun. police say that he began firing at them. they fired back. the gunman was critically shot and is now being treated at medstar. also, one of the montgomery county police officers who responded was also wounded in the hand

aaron gilchrist is here with that story. aaron? >>> robert zimmerman spoke to piers morgan on cnn and said that the leak of a police report that details his brother's story allowed him to now go public because the investigation had been compromised. i want to show you video again. it was released wednesday showing george zimmerman after the confrontation with trayvon martin. if you look closely, it looks like zimmerman has no injuries in this video. robert zimmerman, though, told piers his brother is still recovering from a broken nose. he said it looked to him like his brother's nose was swollen in this video. he also said that just because there was no visible blood does not mean he wasn't injured. robert also said that his brother is now dealing with some serious emotional issues. >> he's been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder. he was not right from the moment it happened. he didn't call his family and express anything but, you know sadness. there was a dark not. he had changed. he wasn't the same. he would never be

aaron gilchrist is live with more. aaron? >> this weakens his claims that he was attack and beaten. if you watch the tape, zimmerman doesn't appear to be hurt at all. tack a look. sanford police have confirmed for us this is george zimmerman obtained by abc news. it shows him in handcuffs being led by a police cruiser. you see he's being patted down. then he's led down a series of hall ways inside the police department. the 28-year-old's face and head are pretty visible and he appears to be uninjured. you'll remember that zimmerman's attorney said trayvon martin broke his client's nose and smashed his head into the ground several times. >> america is watching that video and then listening to those 911 tapes and they are asking him the question, how long is it before george michael zimmerman is on vigilante, killed for kill and unarmed tabler who only had a bag of skittles. >> he claims he shot martin during self-defense while on neighborhood watch patrol. he said he lost sight of martin as he followed him and martin attacked him from behind. george zimmerman's attorney has yet to co

aaron gilchrist is at the news4 superscreen with more on what we are learning about that soldier. aaron? >>> yeah, joe. the army has not yet released the name of the staff sergeant accused in the killings. we do know more about his background. the staff sergeant joined the army 11 years ago after the september 11 attacks. since then he has served three tours of duty in iraq. during one of those tours back in 2010 he suffered a traumatic brain injury after a vehicle he was riding in rolled over. military records show he was evaluated and allowed to return to duty. then in december of that year, last year, rather, we're told that he was deployed for his first tour of duty in afghanistan. then on february 1, something else happened here. he was assigned to a special operations unit for a village stability program. he would have worked with navy s.e.a.l.s. or green berets who visited nearby villages to establish a neighborhood watch program. on sunday, military leaders say that this soldier opened fire in those two villages in afghanistan, killing civilians. they were near the base in
