we begin right here with aaron gilchrist with no reaction from the president's advisers. what are we hearing from the campaign? >> it really is saying onward and upward. they acknowledge the president's performance on thursday night but we know president biden and the first lady now are on their way to the hamptons for a couple of fundraising events there before they go to new jersey to raise more money for the campaign. they are trying to continue with the work for the president during the campaign cycle. they did mention it was not the president's best performance. he said himself he recognized it was not his best performance, but they do feel like substance is what really matters here. while donald trump's performance may have been better they felt president biden did a better job of talking about the issues and his plans for the future. anita dunn saying earlier today he was interested in the issues and interested in talking about the issues. i want to play more what she said this morning. >> the president is who he is. he does believe the american people have a right

joining me now, nbc's aaron gilchrist covering the white house. matt dowd, and maria teresa kumar of voter latino and an msnbc contributor. aaron, explain how this is going to work and how quickly we might see the impact. >> reporter: well, chris, effectively this order is now in place. as we understand it, president biden signed the executive order this morning, and so these new rules are now in place at the u.s. border with mexico. and the goal here as we understand it from senior administration officials is to prevent migrants who approached the border, cross the border unlawfully from getting asylum here in the united states. and as we see this go into effect, the plan is that if daily encounters reach 2500 a day, people trying to cross into the united states at -- not at a port of entry, then that would trigger this rule and the average as we understand it is about 4,000. effectively this rule could be used as of today to keep people from being able to get into the united states, to seek asylum. there are some carveouts, some exceptions to thi

aaron gilchrist was the first to report the story. what's the plan? >> i think the biden campaign would say it doesn't have major concerns about support dropping in the lgbtq community. at the same time, it made clear its strategy is not to take any vote for granted and it wants to, as is the case with the lgbtq community, go after and be in front of potential voters early and often, is the phrase that we have heard from the biden campaign so often. and so what we learned in our reporting told is that the biden campaign is launching this effort during pride month, the month of june, to go to lgbtq voters and make the case for president biden laying out what he's done to support the community. we know that the campaign intends to have -- members o. of the campaign or surrogates at 200 events throughout the month of june across the country particularly in battle ground states. in 23 states, we saw the first lady, dr. jill biden in pittsburgh at the pride festival there over the weekend speaking strongly about her husband's support for the lgbtq communit

citizens but let's go to aaron gilchrist with the president in los angeles ahead of the star- studdedser tonight for the president. what do we know about this new immigration initiative from the white house that we have just learned about , and the part thanks to you about an hour ago. >> reporter: the team has been looking into this for a couple of weeks. we knew there would be at least a couple of announcements coming from the white house on issues related to migration and immigration in this country. multiple sources tell nbc news, sources family with the white house plans around this executive action that we could see this from the president as early as tuesday. what this executive action does is protect about half 1 million undocumented immigrants living in the u.s. currently from being deported, in particular were talking about the spouses of u.s. citizens, who have been in this country for at least 10 years. this would protect them from being deported and allow them to work in this country, as well. we knew a week or so ago when president biden announced this initiative around

we begin with aaron gilchrist, following by president biden in los angeles. what did we hear from the president last night during his record-breaking fundraiser? >> well, president biden and former president barack obama had a wide-ranging conversation last night with jimmy kimmel. they focused mostly on the work that biden has done during his time in office. there was also a lot of comparison to former president donald trump as biden try to make the case for why he should stay in the white house. he told the crowd of hollywood a listers and influencers trump, quote, doesn't care what happens to ordinary people. they discussed misinformation, widens recent g7 summit in italy. efforts to reform immigration policy, as well. some of the strongest remarks were about the supreme court, and he said the next president will likely get to nominate two new justices, and said that this right-leaning court is out of step with americans. the biden harris campaign actually provided msnbc some video from last night. watch this. >> after the decision that overruled roe v wad

. >> okay, aaron gilchrist, thank you for that. let's go to washington for we have been tracking donald trump's moves since the debate. the former president seems to be taking a victory lap. what has he been telling voters? >> that's right. the former president changing up the opening of his stump speech in virginia yesterday to focus on his debate performance. he is casting the debate and the entire 2024 election in terms of strength versus weakness, and there is some pulling out this month to backup that argument for now. among registered voters, 66% described trump as tough but only 28% said the same thing about president biden, but he was careful to avoid saying biden is too old to run again. trump himself is obviously just a few years younger than the president. instead, he said he thinks biden is no longer up to the job. trump again emphasizing yesterday, he thinks the problem is not biden's age, it is his competence. >> despite the fact that crooked joe biden spent the entire week at camp david resting, working, studying, he

today -- >> sorry, jeff, sorry to interrupt, but i want to bring in a white house correspondent, aaron gilchristunt one, guilty. count two, the jury finds hunter biden guilty. and on count three, which is possession of a firearm by a drug user or drug addict, guilty. hunter biden has just been found guilty on all three of the counts against him. ken? >> reporter: yeah, i have to say, i mean, that's not a surprising verdict, particularly after three hours of jury deliberations. there's a lot of questions here about whether there would be -- nobody predicted an acquittal, but a hung jury, whether there would be one juror that held out being sympathetic that nobody was harmed by this gun, and now we see the jury has adopted the view of the prosecutors, that hunter biden knowingly violated the law when he purchased a handgun while using drugs, and now he's going to live with the consequences that this is a felony conviction. as jeff said, it's extremely unlikely that hunter biden will be incarcerated by the judge today. what is more likely, she will set a sentencing date two to three months from now

i want to go to nbc news white house correspondent aaron gilchrist who is getting reaction from the biden campaign. what are we hearing? >> reporter: we did just get this statement from a senior biden campaign adviser, not from the white house, though this is the sort of decision we would anticipate getting a statement, potentially from the president himself, or from someone at the white house, but the campaign released this statement that says no american should overlook the startling reality behind today's decision, protecting domestic abuse survivors from gun violence should never be a question, but the fact it even had to be considered shows just how extreme donald trump and the gun lobby are. there is only one candidate in this race fighting to save lives from gun violence and that's joe biden. of course, finishing there with the sort of line that you might expect from a campaign on something like this. we know that it was just a week ago last week when the white house put out another statement from president biden after a supreme court decision that addressed the use of bump stocks,
