aaron glantz, if you have done a lot of research on soldier suicides. talk about derrick put it in the broader context of not only soldiers, but veterans as well? >> unfortunately, there are many stories like that i wrote a few years ago about a specialist john fish who served a tour in iraq, was suicidal and told his commanders he was suicidal in iraq. he came back to the u.s. and they told him to just start turning to go to afghanistan. during the training exercises, he walked into the desert and shot myself in the head with the military issued weapon. we have been at war for 10 years. we of 2.5 million americans who have served in these wars. about 1 million are still in the military. one put 5 million are out of the military and our veterans. -- 1.5 million are out of the military and our veterans. we have not asked people to go through war in this kind of way probably since world war ii. in vietnam, people serve one tour and came home. we had a draft. now we ask people to go again and again. you have a million people who have been through the wars
