another big day for aaron hern on his road to recovery.e will undergo a second surgery after he was hit by shrapnel watching the boston marathon. students and friends here in marpt ez are pulling for him. we're also hearing from his dad, who is updating us on his condition, appearing on the "today" show with his doctor and also a football coach at alhambra high school. 11-year-old aaron remains in intensive care after he was hurt in the blast, waiting for his mom to cross the finish line. he attends the junior high school here and was very close when these blasts went off. his grnd mother says he was at least six feet away, close enough for his hair to be singed. students started a collection to help pay for the expenses. alan hern describes that day. he was with his doctor. >> everybody was toward the finish line. a few seconds later, the second bomb went off right -- maybe 15 feet from where i was. and aaron and our friend's son were much closer than that and toob the brunt of the explosion. >> reporter: friends describe aaron as friendl

aaron hern is still in intensive care at boston children's hospital. but he is going to live. his mother posted an facebook last night saying -- on facebook last night saying the 12-year-old communicated with nods that he is okay and comfortable but frustrated without the ability to communicate. he is due for another surgery today. he went to boston to cheer his mother as she ran the marathon. he now has shrapnel wounds to the legs. one is severe and will require more surgery and possibly even skin grafts. people here in the bay area are rallying around aaron and his family. the restaurant rocks on main in martinez hosted a special dinner also night with all the proceeds going to the hern family and say they will do it every tuesday until the family comes home. >> i'm here to support the family and this wonderful community we live in. we have amazing people here and everybody is rallying together to make sure that the herns are taken care of. >> reporter: organizers asked for $5 a plate last night. but people donated what they wanted and some people gave up to $40. aaron will

aaron hern spent the day touring the bomb site. kron 4 spoke with a family friend about his progress so far. she says as hard as was in support for family to go back to where the attack happen. >> i think for some people it was a closure. >> i think right now one of the biggest issues for aaron is how my going to get all these cards and presents people have said to me home on the airplane. >> aaron was able to take a few steps at the bomb site. he's still at least stay in boston for a little longer he is going to react. the good news is that he can do that on outpatient basis. he and his family are expected to return to the bay area and a couple of weeks. >> we are learning new details about a massive manhunt that led to the arrest appeared the bombing suspect. we're learning that the surviving suspect was on arm at the time was captured last friday. officials say no firearm was found in the bold where he was hiding. even though authorities had originally said there was a shootout between the 19 year-old and police. in the meantime

>> pam: one of those injured in the blasts was 11 year old aaron hern from martinez. hern was in surgery again this afternoon. kron 4's j.r. stone is following the story. he has been in contact with his family. j.r.? >> reporter: the news from the hospital pam is good. the trauma surgeon successfully closed aaron's wounds a matter of hours ago. 11 year old aaron hern was hit with shrapnel when the bombs went off at the end of the boston marathon. he had been waiting with his father and sister for his mother to finish. his father described his injuries on his son's leg as looking like a war wound. well they likely look better than that tonight. the successful surgery means aaron will not need skin grafts. he also hasn't been able to talk because of the breathing tube that is being used. his mother told us earlier today that doctors were hoping to take that out. at this point though that hasn't happened. when aaron does occasionally wake up he uses a touchpad to write what he is thinking. he is starting to remember things as well. he told his mom he was worried about a

pam: after the service, the president and first lady those injured in the bombings. 11-year-old aaron hern of martinez was one of the victims who got a surprise visit from the first lady. aaron was injured while watching his mother finish the race. aaron's mother posted on facebook, that her son is almost completely free of most of the medical tubes, and his neck brace has been removed. while he is improving, it is still not known how long aaron will remain in the hospital. more chilling video coming out of the city of west, in texas, as rescue workers continue to search for survivors of the deadly fertilzer plant explosion. the town's mayor says, the death toll from last night's blast has risen to 35. with more than 160 people hurt. after the explosion, most of the town was evacuated, and as you can see. not much left of the area near the fertilizer plan. tonight. an apartment complex destroyed, houses left in ruins, and roofs ripped apart. the blast was so large, it registered as a 2- point 1- magnitude seismic event tonight rescue crews remain hopeful. calling their work a "search and r
