again tonight, aaron katersky. >> reporter: tonight, with the suspected killer of brian thompson expected to be waive extradition from pennsylvania, luigi mangione is preparing to defend himself against a murder charge in new york. he hired a new lawyer, karen friedman agnifilo, who floated a possible defense strategy during a recent tv appearance. >> there might be a not guilty by reason of insanity defense that they're going to be thinking about because the evidence is going to be so overwhelming that he did what he did. >> reporter: about two weeks before the murder, mangione's mother reported her son missing with san francisco police. once his face was flashed around the country on this wanted poster, they called new york. and when investigators spoke to mangione's mother, she told them the young man in the poster could be her son. he was arrested the next day when he was spotted at a mcdonald's. mangione has become a social media folk hero, alarming police. a threat assessment obtained by abc news says the narrative supporting his targeted attack likely served to encourage like-minde

here's abc's senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky. >> reporter: tonight, with the searchon its fifth day, the nypd believes the suspect is seen in these newly released images, entering a taxi on his way out of the city. authorities still have not found or named him but they believe the suspect escaped by bus 45 minutes after united healthcare ceo brian thompson was gunned down. >> i don't want to do anything that's going to tip them off, him off that we're on his trail, but we feel really good where we are. >> reporter: police today searching this pond in central park for a second day. divers scouring the water for evidence, including the distinctive murder weapon and the bicycle the suspect was seen pedaling away from the crime scene. the pond is close to the spot where police found what they believe is the suspect's backpack. sources say it contained a jacket and monopoly money. detectives are trying to determine if the play money was meant as some sort of statement. >> there's almost a game-like quality to this behavior. >> reporter: investigators are working to determ

senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is in huntington, pennsylvania, with the latest for us. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the suspect is being held at this pennsylvania state prison following his arrest at that mcdonald's when police confronted him, they said they knew immediately, that's our guy. he's now charged with murder. police say he was carrying evidence that could point them to motive. this morning luigi mangione is charged with the murder of ceo brian thompson. the 26-year-old led by police in handcuffs, appearing in a pennsylvania court on local fun and forgery charges. >> this morning approximately 9:14 a.m., altoona officers received a call of a suspicious male at a restaurant. >> reporter: he was arrested 300 miles from the scene, traveling on a bus that stopped at this mcdonald's. someone recognized him and an employee called 911. >> the mcdonald's employee did something we ask every american to do. if you see something, say something. most importantly, do something. and they did. >> reporter: officers found mangione wearing a mask

want to go back to our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky. him. he left clues here at the scene including writings on the very bullets he fired. this morning a frantic man hunt for the man authorities sported on this video shooting and killing brian thompson, ceo of united healthcare. police said it was no accident. >> every indication is that this was a premeditated, preplanned targeted attack. >> reporter: the gun appears to have a silencer and jammed when the shooter cleared it, police say he fired again. >> from watching the video it does seem he's proficient in the use of firearms. he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly. >> all units be advise male shot in the confines of manhattan. >> reporter: police say it was around 6:45 a.m. wednesday when the suspect gunned down thompson as he was walking alone into the hilton for an investors conference. in new video overnight, the shooter seen here about 20 minutes before the shooting. >> looking for a male 5 feet, 10 inches in height, cream colored jacket, black mask, black gloves.

senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky starts us off. , aaron. >> reporter: good morning, george. detectives are optimistic they're closing in, but heading into a sixth day of searching, they still do not have an identity of the suspect or anyone in custody. this morning the nypd is hoping someone recognizes these latest images of the suspect. the suspect seen getting into a taxi 20 minutes after the shooting, appearing to look at the camera. by then he had ditched the bike he was spotted riding into and out of central park, where nypd divers spent the weekend searching a pond for clues. police have yet to recover the bike or the murder weapon. the pond is near the spot where officers found what they think is the suspect's backpack. it contained a tommy hilfiger jacket and monopoly money. detectives are working to determine whether the play money was meant as some sort of statement. >> it's some kind of statement. a messaging that has to be figured out. that's not really what the immediate need is. it is to get him arrested. the motive, w

senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is tracking this. morning irk aaron. >> reporter: police have the clearest image yet of the suspect, and the reason they have it is because he was flirting with a girl. this morning police are confident someone will recognize this suspected killer seen smiling in images released by the nypd after the assassination style murder of ceo brian thompson. the images come from a hostel in manhattan's upper west side where police sources tell abc news the suspect checked in november 30th using a fake name and new jersey i.d. sources say the woman at the check-in desk asked to see his smile so the shooter obliged, allowing a surveillance camera to capture his face without a mask. sources say he arrived in new york november 24 on a bus that originated in atlanta. greyhound saying we are fully cooperating with authorities on this active investigation. police are investigating whether the shooter left the city on a bus after the killing. early wednesday morning the suspect was seen with a backpack exiting the subw
