this comes as va chief aaron shinseki is being subpoenaed, being forced to answer questions about veterans who may have died while on that secret wait list which was first reported by cnn. nou shinseki has ordered a face-to-face audit of all veterans hospitals around the country trying to determine if policies have been broken. investigative correspondent drew griffin is tracking the story from texas this morning. good morning, drew. >> reporter: carol, this nationwide review, review of medical access at every single va vilt and clinic across the country is no small undertaking. i would imagine members of congress would say it's long overdue. in the meantime there are new allegations which is why we're reporting from texas. san antonio, texas, is the latest location where investigators from the office of the inspector general are on the ground, trying to determine if managers at this sprawling va hospital were trying to hide the fact veterans had been waiting months to get care and if any veterans died as a result. the allegations come from this clerk who works in the hospital's medical ad

. >> secretary aaron shinseki said he was surprised by the allegations but accepts full responsibility am. i asked the inspector general to go and conduct a complete, detailed, thorough investigation. >> reporter: some in congress and the american legion demand shinseki resign. but he brushed it off. will you resign? >> i would say i serve at the pleasure of the president. >> reporter: it's alleged hospital administrators buried appointments in a secret list and then ordered the files destroyed. >> it really cuts to the core of our country's confidence in the v.a. the entire public has lost confidence in the v.a. >> congress is poised to way in on all this as early as today. we expect to see subpoenas issued for v.a. hospital records that they have failed voluntarily to provide to congress. a round of hearings is expected next. congress will want to know what happened here and what went wrong and was there any criminal activity involved. >> given shinseki's background or career, is there a level of huge shock that he has been unable to make a crack, a dent into the v.a. bureaucracy? it

now the veterans affairs secretary aaron shinseki is facing a house subpoena after the cnn investigationme for these 40 deaths. let's bring in cnn correspondent drew griffin. you're joining us from san antonio. that's where the story took you. what have you found there? >> reporter: it's a brand new investigation now opened by the va office of inspector general. it basically started yesterday with the outing of a clerk, chris. this is a guy who actually schedules medical appointments for vets coming in. he says a vet will come into san antonio, needs to see a doctor right away. because there are no appointment times, they will schedule him out three, four months in advance, but when he goes to write in the book, into the va's keeping track list of when the appointments are made, he says he has to put in that that vet was seen within two weeks, within the allotted national time frame that the va is trying to reach. he says it's nothing more than cooking the books. take a listen. >> so it could be three months and it looks like 14 days. >> it could be three months and look like no days. it

aaron glantz, let's start with you. why shinseki to testify. >> he had to go before congress because news organizations have reported there were as many as 40 veterans who died waiting for care at the va hospital in phoenix, arizona and that while there were waiting, the v.a. was simultaneously falsifying the official record of how long veterans were waiting and keeping a secret list. they had two list. one represented how long veterans were actually waiting, and that was secret, and the other list represented everything being absolutely fine and honest everyone being seen within two weeks. and that is what was presented to washington. in the aftermath of this report, there have been many other whistleblowers who have come forward across the country in chicago, in texas, in arizona. colorado, and of course dr. mathews as well, to talk about similar problems and it reached a boiling point. you mentioned in the intro, the american legion called for secretary shinseki's resignation. these are all problems. the previous chairwoman of th
