he struggled to connect with black voters, abby. what do you make of this latest move? >> i have to say, ana, it was a strange gent, because just before that event, the campaign had basically told reporters, you can expect senator sanders to go out there and speak directly to african-american voters about why sanders is better for the black community than joe biden, and when we're all listening to this event and watching it unfold, bernie sanders didn't do that at all. and it was a real question whether he would, because for basically the last four years, and perhaps his entire career, sanders' message has been pretty clear. it's been about workers and about a sort of political revolution in the way that the community operates and there were real questions about whether he would be willing to tailor that message to black voters. the answer last night, at least, was that he was not. the campaign says it's because they wanted the african-american leaders, local leaders, to speak for themselves. but i think it seemed to be a missed opportunity for sanders to finally make t

what is the standard push for voters there abby phillip?r a lot about the bail out. senator sanders is trying to up the contract between him and joe biden as we go into these final days. particularly here in michigan it is really clear that his campaign believes the state important for them to regain their momentum in this race. they had a disappointing super tuesday and michigan was the place where in 2016 sanders was able to pull out a victory over hillary clinton. he's basically asking the state to do the same for him this time around and so you are hearing very sharp contrasts with biden over his record particularly on the issue of trade and healthcare and on social security and you are hearing sanders trying to also appeal to african-american voters. he broke out the endorsement of jesse jackson this morning, jackson's past messages of civil rights and fights for the civil rights and made a connection between sanders as much of those fights in the past. that's endorsement where the sanders campaign believes it isicali is critically imp

abby, african-americans have spoken in this election loudly now. >> absolutely. and it made a huge difference for joe biden. because what black voters do is they use their political power in a way that -- it's not that they vote unanimously. but they vote in a block in a way that can power someone who actually appeals to their needs as voters. and what you also saw was bernie sanders trying. i mean, he tried really hard. wouldn't you agree? bernie sanders actually worked on this more this cycle than he did certainly last cycle. it didn't really make a whole -- very much difference. because black voters basically looked at the situation and they said, this is who we think is going to end up being the best shot against donald trump. that is the number one priority for black voters. they know joe biden. and from the very beginning, what joe biden needed to do was hold onto that vote. and he was able to do it. but he was also able to do it because congressman jim clyburn came through and really -- i mean, honestly had clyburn not come through and given the endorsemen
