. >> abby phillip, what struck me, you go to tom bossert, the president's former national security adviserng to go out and say in public and no uncertain terms that the president buys a conspiracy theory two and a half years into his presidency he does not accept that russia interfered in the election. how does the white house explain that to you? >> what you're hearing from tom bossert is something between the president's aides. seeing the president go down to rabbit hole that is self-destructive. and there are officials frustrated they can't get him off of these conspiracy theories. that these -- some of these allegations about ukraine are completely debunked and the president nevertheless continues to be attached to them. white house aides are not even bothering to defend the substance of many of the allegations. that is what we have to remember here. we are just trying to say that nothing the president did was illegal according to the letter of the law. so i think it's very telling that you're not seeing a real substantive defense of what the president is actually wanting the ukrainian

abby phillip is live with more on this.w this was behind closed doors, but you get the sense he's not holding back. >> that's right. the not so cold war between president trump and his former national security adviser continues this week as john bolton unloads on president trump in this private meeting. now, a source who attended the meeting said that bolton did not name trump specifically but offered a scathing critique of the foreign policy led by president trump. specifically bolton was critical of trump's insistence in wanting to negotiate. he talked about the president's plan a couple of weeks ago to bring the taliban here to the united states during the week in which it would have marked september 11th. bolton called that disrespectful. and we also know based on what sources told us at the time that the night before bolton resigned, he and president trump had a shouting match in the oval office over this very issue. now in this meeting with foreign policy experts yesterday, bolton made it clear that he felt like presi

"the washington post" says the president made a promise to a foreign leader of urgent concern. what's the white house saying about this, this morning? >> the white house hasn't responded at all to this bombshell report. the president hasn't responded as he often does on social media before his aides even get around to it. but the context around this is something that's been dogging president trump since the very beginning of his presidency. his calls and his communications with other foreign leaders and what he says in those private calls. and as shane noted, we should be clear that we believe there are about five calls the president had with foreign leaders. but the white house ended the practice of reading out these calls on a regular and consistent basis over a year ago. and even beyond that. every white house conducts calls with foreign leaders that they don't disclose publicly so there could be other conversations that happen. but it's clear that over the course of president trum

joining us now, abby phillip and lauren fox. lauren, you've been covering this for some time. one week ago, impeachment was kind of floating up in the ether. it wasn't going anywhere. there were 47 different lines of inquiry. this week with the ukraine scandal and a true impeachment inquiry is underway. >> that's right, jim. nancy pelosi the speaker of the house, she held a conference call with her caucus yesterday basically explaining exactly what she wanted them to do. she's arguing that they need to take this carefully. and she also touted again that adam schiff, the chairman of the intelligence committee is going to be taking the helm of the investigation into this phone call specifically because it is in his committee's jurisdiction. that, of course, is a major shift because the house judiciary committee which is chaired by jerry nadler has been taking the helm surrounding the mueller report. so a very big change over the last week. and of course that official announcement that this is now an impeachment inquiry. >> abby, we're just getting in word this is crossing on reu
