abby phillip is our correspondent in washington. , there is a lot of talk about the so-called new tone from the president from this week. but, i mean, i held a white house event for children, they weren't wearing masks, he's still not walking the walk. jnk >> and his actions show that he still wants his world to be just the way that it was before this pandemic even though for the rest of the country they have to live in a world in which masks are increasingly becoming required in all public spaces. you see at the white house, because the president is being tested so regularly, and because people around him are being tested regularly, the president's aides and supporters say well he doesn't need to social distance or wear a mask in the same way that others do. but what that shows to the public is that do as i say not as i do. there is a part of the job of the presidency that is demonstrating the kinds of actions that he wants the american public to follow and clearly that is not what is happening at the white house in recent days. >>

our political correspondent, abby phillip, has been digging into this. >> reporter: the epicenter ofronavirus outbreak in the u.s. has shifted from the north to the south and west. but one thing has remained the same, in arizona, mississippi and in florida, black, hispanic and native americans are still being disproportionately infected, hospitalized and killed by the virus. and the problem is likely to get worse. the 23 states in the south and west with growing coronavirus outbreaks are home to 71% of all hispanics and nearly two-thirds of all people of color in the united states, according to the kaiser family foundation. yes, most of these are red states, in some cases the states that resisted stay-at-home orders and mask wearing, moving quickly to reopen with the support of the trump administration. >> it's time to stay open and we will put out the fires as they come up. >> reporter: but black and brown communities are paying the price. >> my father, i believe, was robbed of life. my father was mexican-american for the majority of the stay-at-home ordinance he was working until h

we want to bring in abby phillip to build on some of suzanne's comments there as she said it comes in steps and it comes in increments and i think seeing this procession today and seeing john lewis being honored over the course of six days, it's also a reminder that when john lewis was a young man there were questions about whether what he was doing was right. was this the right way? was this the way that america will become a better place for all americans? and the answers were certainly not as clear to many americans which brings us to the moment that we are in a racial reckoning going on across the united states and there are similar questions and people not knowing if things are heading in the right direction or maybe they're uncomfortable or they are fearful and looking back on john lewis' life is something that maybe can inform this moment for us about the path forward and how history may judge the moment we are in now. >> yeah. i think that this is one of the parts about having this moment and having someone who spent so much of his life in the public sphere, you can see the be
