abby royce with the bay area council economic institute says she doesn't exactly know how much san franciscan businesses have lost, but she can pinpoint how much the city isn't spending. >> sales tax revenue is dead last on that list . still down, almost 14 million. 11% from pre-pandemic levels. our whole ecosystem has been shattered and we are trying to build it back up. >> reporter: but some business owners might see a change in the neighborhood. salesforce is asking workers to return to the office by october. at least, partially. the company divided their staff into three categories. office based, office flex, and remote. most workers will fall into the office flex category, meaning they will be expected to be in the office at least three times per week. office-based employees have to show up 4 to 5 times per week, and fully remote workers will be determined on a case-by-case basis. roy says these changes might draw people to the area but it may not be enough to revive downtown. >> i think it's a great step in the right direction to at least increase some vitality in our downtown spaces. >
