new poll now showing the race tightening as the former baseball star made a visit to the bay area today. >> abc seven news reporter zach fuentes joins us live from our south bay bureau with a closer look at the poll and what the numbers could mean as we get closer to the march 5th primary. zach yeah, it's important to remember that in this primary race, the two candidates with the most votes go on to the november election regardless of their party and californians haven't elected a republican to the u.s. senate since 1988. >> but this new poll does show garvey possibly making it into the top two for the race to claim the u.s. california senate seat is heating up. a poll released thursday by emerson college shows where the four frontrillionunners stand. 25% of respondents said they'd vote for adam schiff, putting him in the lead in second place is republican candidate steve garvey, with 18% democratic candidates katie porter and barbara lee came in third and fourth place with 13 and 8. garvey met with members of the bay area jewish community thursday at the chabad of the tri-valley to talk about

this is exciting news. abcseven news obtained a letter from mayor london breed to chinese president xi jinping, and in it, she says that after apec, she wants to grow our friendship to greatly benefit our youth and to continue our joint efforts on panda conservation. and she suggested a partnership with the san francisco zoo to host the giant pandas. the letter also reveals how mayor breed first made the panda request as she, while bidding him farewell on the tarmac as he departed from apec. multiple sources close to the effort confirmed to abc seven news anchor dion lim that san diego was also in the running for a possible panda. however, given the relationships that were built and strengthened during apec, it's believed that san francisco has the advantage. this comes after the end of a 50 year conservation program with the chinese government, and it expired in november as a result, zoos across the country returned their pandas to china. so we're working on getting more information on this. also possible time
