abdullah was very reluctant to come because the intifada was in full force yasser arafat was being held captive by the israelis at his compound in ramallah so you crap prince abdullah was very reluctant to come he finally decided to come and brought with him a videotape to show the president the violence that was being perpetrated by the israelis on the palestinian civilians i was actually at that meeting in crawford and was very close to the situation and so if you look at it from that context the saudi unhappiness with the american position on israel has been going on for quite a number of years while ambassador jordan as you just sad the relationship has never been particularly easy but i think there was always a signal code of ethics to a code that was broken just a couple of days ago when saudi arabia very publicly refused the security council see if they see that it's been logging for for almost three years and on top of that one of the country's most powerful politicians intelligence chief prince bandar bin sultan. allows himself to criticize american policies in public why do you think all of the sudden he decided to break this code of silence that saudi and american officials maintain for a couple of decades already well i would say the last three or four years have not been good for the saudis in terms of the relationship with the united states and what they've expected from this administration they thought after president obama's speech in cairo that he would be a friend of the muslims and would really take initiative with regard to the israeli palestinian question i think also a little over a year ago his speech on syria in which he said there was a red line that syria. could not cross with chemical weapons made them have high expectations that the president would deliver on that and he hasn't in fact he backtracked and greatly disappointed the saudis by agreeing to the weapons inspections in syria instead of arming the rebels and pursuing a regime change which had been the stated policy of the americans before that so the saudis started to believe i think that they couldn't trust the americans they couldn't trust president obama to keep his word on what he was was pursuing and it's interesting that the hear you say that because you mentioned syria just now and prince bandar of course is believed to be the main architect of the saudi efforts in syria as well as the kingdom's broader vision for the middle east i know that at the time when you were the ambassador he was serving as the saudi ambassador to washington and you obviously math many times what kind of impression did he make and he's somebody who would talk before thinking in other words when he sat dad there will be a major shift in his country's relations with the united states does he actually mean it well i have great respect for prince bandar i worked very closely with him when we were both serving as ambassador he was extremely helpful to the united states in the invasion of iraq in helping saudi policy harmonize with the united states i do think when he speaks he means it is not the kind of person who speaks loosely but i also think that he has a degree of emotion attached to some of this and it may be that some of that emotion is also now coming out it these are very emotional topics for the saudis and in many ways relate to their very existence if iran is going to be allowed some sort of grand bargain by this administration in washington then this is a huge problem for the saudis and i think prince bandar is speaking out from a saudi national interest standpoint you just mentioned iran and i think it's become a sort of a political cliche bowl. and washington and then west and the west in general that you know iran is the end game here and that it's it is all ultimately there ron but how iranian issue really is threatens the saudi security the saudi interests well a nuclear armed iran even though they don't point those weapons at saudi arabia will have a lot more political influence in the region particularly with enormous influence in iraq the saudis are seeing their world become smaller their sphere of influence becomes smaller and this is a huge problem for them it's interesting that you say that i feel like we're entering this us is rarely a debate because it's there this is sort of argument that you hear from israelis even despite the fact that neither the israeli nor saudi you know are american intelligence have been able to confirm that iran has indeed started producing are even has an intention of producing nuclear weapons but i wonder if you if you believe that the very public disappointment that prince bandar expressed with the obama administration is ultimately g.t. the party differences between the democrats and the republicans or do they reflect a broader risk bits of in these two countries where first bandar and certainly king abdullah were very vocal even when president bush was in office that they did not appreciate the president's policy with respect to the israelis and the palestinians they wanted a much more aggressive position by the americans they wanted the americans to bring the israelis to the negotiating table and exercise influence on them and so even back in those days there was a tremendous amount of tension over the palestinian issue i do think that they have more differences with this administration in terms of syria in terms of iran and even in terms of egypt i think that's a topic we should also introduce here they were infuriated by president obama's. abandonment of president mubarak in egypt and further infuriated by the reduction in military aid to egypt that has just been announced recently so essentially what you are saying is that this is ultimately a sign that the saudis and prince bandar are really trying to redefine dive role in the relationship with the united states and i think it's long
