newsom with 100% of the precincts in, he has 50% of the vote defeating republican challenger abel maldonado39% of the vote. newsom says he is going to hit ground running and give californians the government they deserve. cbs 5 political insider phil matier joins us now with a look at what newsom is facing as the state's next lieutenant governor. >> reporter: well, one of the big things he is going to be facing is the prospects of serving under jerry brown who just a couple of months ago gavin newsom was running against for the democratic nomination but he swallowed that crow and made a political comeback of sorts. the next question is, who replace gavin newsom at city hall? after all, he still has a year left in his term and there's already a lot of speculation, who fillings in that spot? it's a lot of power. and just hours after gavin newsom finished celebrating his win as you see here, in the lieutenant governor's race, he was down celebrating the giants win. and guess what. the topic of who might replace him became front and center in his remarks to the crowd. let's give it a listen. >>
