shares of abercrombie and fitch are plunging today.ell shorts of estimates in the latest quarter, and so did revenue. but they've left a lengthy sales slump behind. investors may be concerned its current growth is starting to lose momentum. for uber, it's one more acknowledgment that cars are not always the best form of urban transportation. bloomberg has learned that it's now building its own scooter. the project has been overseen by jump bikes, the bike sharing service that was bought in april for more than $100 million t. already announced plans to integrate services on its app. on track to become manhattan's largest office tenant. bloomberg has learned the co-working giant is in talks to lease about 200,000 square feet at one world trade center. that would push we work past morgan stanley chase, which is 5.2 million square feet leased in manhattan. and that is your latest bloomberg business flash. definitely work in the future is very interesting things to note in we work. but for now, another company that has some interesting thin

too much i like this action amazon is on fire this year, but the big retail names like kohl's and abercrombie and 5 below, they're all soaring 30% to 50% this year. what's going on? first, the second-quarter earnings and i don't mean in general. the 108 retailers that retail metrics track are seeing earnings gains of 18% and that's almost as good as the whole s&p 500 gain of 22% so the retailers are making money why is this happening? well, the big box retailers are finally starting to solidify positions and are grabbing some business that amazon isn't they're not going through amazon so the discounters like ross stores and tjx and the ross stores are doing better and most importantly the department stores and the macy's and nordstrom's, they're finally seeing revenue stability and even a little bit of improvement in some cases. second thing and this is important. some of this may reflect the fact that there are fewer and fewer stocks and we talked about this there were about 150 publicly-traded retail companies in the mid-2000. you know what we're down to now? 108. one-third less than there

. >>> there is abercrombie & fitch, weaker sales, down 12% at abercrombie & fitch. >>> look at dollar, all these retailers coming in here. they gave a weak profit forecast. their sales fell short. dollar tree is down just a fraction, just 10 cents down. so that is dollar general. dollar tree, get it right, that is down 7%. >>> burlington store, another problem with sales there. they are down nearly 1 1/2%, two bucks down. >>> going the other way entirely, retailer guess up this morning. they have a turnaround program in progress. apparently it is going well. the stock is up 14%. so we have got a mixed picture here from the retailers this morning. looks to me if you survived the ice age, you might do quite well, if you have an online presence. >> absolutely. you had to take a page out of the amazon playbook and develop your online platform, combine that with stores, freshen them up. work on the logistics. walmart, jets.com, target shift, those are survivors. that's what you have to do. >> a story i really don't like, i have no interest in but anyway, starbucks is cutting the sugar in i

. >> retail continues to be very tough sector today abercrombie, pbh, dollar general, dollar tree, michael'ss are all in the red. even though in some of these cases comps did exceed estimates. dollar tree estimates are comps up 3.7, almost double the estimate amazon got to 2008, but then settled back by the way, guys, the $2,000 mark today, the first ever -- first hit $1,000 in may of last year so it's up $1,000 in a year and change pretty amazing just amazing strength in that name >> that would be the momentum. just wanted to check in on bonds because they've been such an influence. yesterday financials actually closed lower because that much heralded yield curve continued to flatten we're going to watch that today in the wake of what we've got which was higher inflation numbers which is going to be the big debate on wall street and whether that's going to -- we're seeing lower yields across the board. 2.86 on the ten-year and that's a big part of the story. what's the bond market seeing. is the yield curve sending an ominous message. every fed president has a different opinion on this. the

macy's, cap, abercrombie & fitch. for thesenice boost retailing names. the bloomberg, we will see decent outperformance relative to market capitalization size on the year. what we're looking at here in white is he s&p 500 total return. they cap. we have thought up about 6.7% on the year. mid-cap, up s&p 500 4.6%. take a look at that in yellow. up 13.4%.0 small-cap, we continue to have that outperformance for the small-cap area segment as investors have looked toward small-cap as a place to hide against trade fairs. most of those companies derive more over there -- more of their revenues domestically. let's turn to large companies and the retailing space. let's take a look at the bloomberg dollar index. you can see earlier it had been down, that would have been its first down day in four. rising higher. not a huge again. the fourth up a day in a row. the first time we have seen that since may. thebloomberg dollar index, dollar is that ties last seen last june. pretty impressive. now let's take a look at two large-cap retailing names in the internet space,

abercrombie & fitch sales are lower.rly loss, however revenue and same store sales fell short of street expectations. >>> now to washington. the latest in the high stakes trade talks. eamon javers join us once again. >> reporter: its almost friday. they want to wrap this up by the end of this week. all sides involved in this negotiation are expressing optimism. all sides also saying they don't want to negotiate in public. we don't have a lot of transparency into what the potential sticking pointsmight be here in terms of bringing canada in to that three-way deal with the united states and mexico. the u.s. and mexico agreed to their own deal earlier this week and said they'd go it alone without canada. in ottawa yesterday, justin trudeau suggested one area, though, that could be a sticking point before the end of the week. here's what he said. >> our government and i personally will stand up to defend supply management and defend our dairy farmers. that is something we have made very, very clear to the americans, even tho
