trying to interview ralph abernathy. the reporter was saying, dr. abernathy, what did you see? did dr. king say anything? did you see the shooter? he kept asking all these questions. abernathy i think was in shock. he didn't say a word. the reporter got frustrated. believe it or not i started identifying with the right -- white reporter. by that time i had interviewed ralph abernathy several times myself and not get much out of him what this guy was getting. i got the standard civil rights interview. martin increased in wisdom and stature and i was his best friend. and it wasn't very useful. and then all of a sudden this reporter got so frustrated that he said well dr. abernathy, you can't talk about what happened tonight. can you tell me when you first met martin luther king? it was like that he snapped out of his trance. he said young man i first met martin luther king on a cold, rainy, january day in 1954 when he arrived at my car soonish -- my parsonage in the company of our prophet, vernon jones. he started telling vernon john's story. i knew who he was but i didn't know m
