abilene, kansas today. a busy and proud town of almost -- typical of the kind of town that comes to mind with the phrase grassroots america. the mark of the past is honored, but he does not live in the past. its streets and its buildings bear testimony to a living and growing america. one of its newest and proudest buildings is the eisenhower museum, a showcasing the history of eisenhower and his family. it is visited daily by citizens from all parts of the country, ranging from dignitaries to schoolboys. inside the museum, the life of dwight eisenhower, born a man, is depicted in a series of murals. from infancy, that life had the flavor of grassroots america about it. eisenhower was born in 1890 in texas. to parents whose families had migrated to pennsylvania from europe and advance to the midwest. his parents lived in abilene before his birth, and it was to abilene, now a peaceful village of the plains, that they returned when he was an infant. and it was here that he grew to maturity, to a childhood tha

there's another house in abilene. on southeast 2nd street where the family lived from 1892 to 1898 which is still standing and this structure built in 1887, like truman, there's a family section. this was owned by one of ike's uncles named abraham lincoln, eisenhower and sold the house to his parents in 1898. ike lived here from the time he was in about third grade until he left for west point in 1911. unlike harry truman who had dreamed of, you know, maybe being a general as a boy. eisenhower didn't really ever have he said later an idea of that growing up, but he really did want a college education, and his brother edgar did too, and so edgar started at the university of michigan. the idea was that ike would work for two years and support edgar, and edgar would drop out, ike would go for two years, and they would kind of leapfrog their way through college, and so to support edgar, eisenhower was working at the bell springs creamery where his father worked, basically as a boiler attendant for about 84 hours a week. i

abilene was an interesting town. it was only about not even a generation removed from it wild, how child passed. abilene is a terminus of trails, you had the great history of the cattle drives, up the trails to kansas, wild bill hancock headed in the city more shot one time. yet it gunfights, everything that goes along with a cow town. eisenhower really absorbed, really enjoyed that history. coincidentally, 1890, the year he was born was also the year that the american frontier was declared closed. you had eisenhower coming into the world at this transition in american history. from this open frontier, moving to a more industrialized age. in fact it's great symmetry in his. life he was born the year the frontier was declared closed. he died the year americas land on the moon. you can see this range of history of eisenhower. embodied and in fact with his creation of nasa, it helped create that. the foundation also, the foundation rather, the frontier gave ike a sense of limits. if most of the freeland was gone, natura

his father was a physician in abilene. he'd gone to a private military academy and sweden was going to the naval academy. and he told ike that if you want to get a college education, you should get a service academy appointment. and so i've been dedicated himself trying to get an appointment to either annapolis or west point. he'd really didn't have a strong preference. he just wanted that college education and he wanted someone to pay for it. and so all these tending the boiler. he's also studying every night during those 12 hours. does well on the appointment there's a competitive exam offered by senator joseph bristow. and then eisenhower secures an appointment. he was too old however to go to annapolis by this time. he was 20 years old. and he would not start college until he was almost 21. and that would have made him a year too old for eligibility in annapolis. and so he ends up going to west point which is fine with him because again, he just wants that college education and he wants to continue playing sports and s
