and lindsay abner, founder of brightpink.org.gnosed with the breast cancer gene and had a preventative double mastectomy at age 23. thank you both for being here tonight on this important topic. >> thank you. >> thank you for having me. >> lindsay, as one who has been through this, what was your reaction to the news this morning? >> well, when i woke up this morning i was absolutely shocked. usually angelina jolie is so reserved as a celebrity. and for her to make the decision to be so public and so vulnerable was absolutely inspiring to me. and the thousands of bright pink women around the country. >> now, tell us how did you make the decision to have a double mastectomy. >> well, like angelina jolie i have a very strong family history of both breast cancer and ovarian cancer. my grandma and great grandma died a week apart both from breast cancer. my mom is an 18-year breast, 17-year ovarian cancer survivor. at teenage he age of 22, after positive for the same mutation angelina has, the brca 1 gene, i made the decision at 23 to

. >> lindsay abner had no signs of breast cancer within she 81 went a double mostectomy at 23. mother was found positive of breast cancer and ten month later of ovarian cancer. these have stocked me with fears. >> reporter: it showed she carried the same mutation that predisposes women to breast cancer, the one discovered in angelina jolie. >> the anxiety of waiting to get cancer vs. doing something to reduce my risk of developing it is what prompted me to have the decision to have the double mastectomy. >> reporter: lindsay's organization, bright pink, advocates a breast reduction. that makes sense in women with a gene mutation. having to remove it in a woman without the gene is more complicated. >> we really don't have any good evidence that removing a healthy breast will help a woman prolong her life or live a better life. so a lot of what drives those decisions is related to anxiety about a new tumor on the other side. >> reporter: a lumpectomy followed by radiation is the most common way to treat my breast cancer. the survival rates are similar to those who choose mastecto

>> about, about four years ago my colleague, abner levin, and i conducted a survey among student, businesstudents specifically that were about to go out into the job market. and we asked them all sorts of questions from, you know, their feelings on privacy policies to whether they believed that there was, um, that work and professional life should be separate and that employers shouldn't cross-judge or go beyond that line. we also posed several questions, and one of the questions was do you think that it is appropriate for an employer to search social networks for publicly available information on you. and we were somewhat surprised that even though they really wanted to participate and they weren't willing to opt out or give up in participating online because that was their existence, in essence, over 50% of them said they they disapproved or highly disapproved of that practice. fast forward now about five years later, and i don't have empirical evidence, but connectedly i would say that a lot of the students that i mentor and i teach colleges and even high schools and middle schools have
