so far, i've told you about two very famous men who met abraham lincoln. i want to tell you about a few who are not as famous. alexander augusta was born in my neck of the woods and awful, virginia in the 1820s to a free black family. at some point in the 1830s his family moved to baltimore in the wake of nat turner's rebellion when virginia authorities clamped down on the rights of free black families in virginia. agusta became a barber, he really wanted to become a doctor. he applied to the university of pennsylvania medical college and was denied admission on account of his race. he moved to toronto where he attended trinity medical school, he became a medical doctor and for the next 6 years practiced medicine in toronto and trained other young black doctors. in 1863 agusta saw that lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation and authorize the use of black soldiers had a week later agusta sent this letter to lincoln. in this letter, agusta talked about how he left the country to gain an education but wanted to return and join the military as a doctor.
