i started at the aclu in 2002. even before that i was doing pro bono work for the aclu in the weeks and months after 9/11. and then this national security program at the aclu which had existed until 1990 9/11 had been shut down because everybody thought it was the end of of history, it was resurrected after 9/11, and i started working in that group which became formalized as the national security project. and we worked on government surveillance, ideological exclusion, the exclusion of foreign scholars because of their political views. we worked on issues relating to immigration and national security and then on issues relating to detention and interrogation. and a lot of my energy was spent during the bush administration on interrogation policy, on trying to compel the government to be more forthcoming about its interrogation policies, about its detention policies. and we had some degree of success in forcing the government to disclose what turned out to be evidence of the torture of prisoners at guantanamo and in
