jim acosta: that's right. i was thinking about this -- there are a couple of different episodes that bring to mind the spin machine that goes on at the white house. one of the most recent examples is when the president was going to the american university to deliver the speech on the iran nuclear deal. in the run-up to that speech, they had allowed us to draw the comparison between jfk in the 1960's. we're saying this is going to be like jfk going to an american university and say that we are willing to pay any price. what the president ended up doing was a very partisan speech. i remember the next day just thinking to myself, or even later that day, the spin they were putting out there that this was going to be like jfk, but when the president was going to deliver a partisan speech to rally the democrats behind him. there was opposition in his own party from jewish-american democrats. i was thinking that we need to call them out on this. we did that story that evening and pointed out that this president has b

jim acosta, thanks very much. let's bring back our panel.lemon, we know the president in his speech today also pushing for an overhaul of the u.s. criminal justice system. he's sort of walking a fine line. i know he had a very detailed, carefully prepared speech. he's calling policing issues in urban areas deeply troubling. what actions do you think he needs to take? >> i think he needs to continue to do exactly what he's doing, and i think he needs to go in even harder. i thought his speech today was brilliant, and he was very natural in saying that, you know, people aren't -- african-americans aren't making these things up. he said that over the past couple of days. and today he said, you know, similar things. but i think that he needs to, while he has the executive power, while he is the chief executive, he needs to figure out what to do next and how he can make a difference. i'm not the president of the united states. i don't know exactly what powers he has as a president to make a difference, but i think he needs to continue on the vain

acosta: that's a good one. i think that when your biography is written and you are the president who called the order to take out osama bin laden, it is very difficult if you do not like barack obama to expect that his biography will be this terrible disaster. it is going to be remembered that he made that call, like it or not. at the same time, he's also the president who said, "i'm going to wind down the wars in iraq and afghanistan." as we know with what is happening with isis and the decision that was made recently was not pulling all our steaks up in afghanistan by the end of the term, that those wars will go on with the next president -- ,ot pulling all our stakes up those wars will go on with the next president, and these are people who are more hawkish than barack obama. the iran nuclear deal was brought up earlier, and it's another x factor that may also have an impact on his legacy. but i think the killing of osama bin laden is a big one from a historical standpoint in my view. ms. ryan: as donald tru

joining me to talk about that is senior white house correspondent jim acosta.good morning. when you talk to white house officials here, they're not saying yet whether or not president obama will be pushing for more gun control legislation. they tried this back in 2013. you'll recall, kashlcarol, the mancian/toomey bill lost by aa few votes and a few of those votes came from red state democrats. so the president couldn't get his own party, not his entire party behind that legislation. since then the white house has just really gone silent on this. they've talked about it. but in terms of pushing legislative action up on capitol hill, they just don't think it's going to happen. they look at the political climate. republicans controlling the house and senate, they don't think it's possible. something changed yesterday, carol. it was striking to hear the president say, we need to politicize this. i think that opens up the question, will the president seek to go out and try to marshal up some sort of legislation up on capitol hill for a show? just to see if they can

jim acosta, first to you, the change in the timeline, the change in the numbers.icy reversal for obama administration, for the president. he's planning to keep 9800 troops, the current force level in afghanistan, through much of 2016. they will take 5500 troops into the early part of 2017. what does that mean? that means there will be more than 5,000 troops on the ground in afghanistan as president obama turns the white house over to his successor. that is not practice president obama had in mind. earlier this year they were planning to get to embassy protection levels by the end of 2016. so, that has changed. it's changed because he's talked to his commanders on the ground in afghanistan. it's changed because of the security situation in afghanistan, which is getting worse by the day. the taliban is making gains in parts of the country the united states was not anticipating and the white house, when you talk to senior administration officials and i talked to them last night, they said this is because the u.s. wants to leave afghanistan in a better place at some p
