adachi. i have a memo from an investigation at the public defender's office, from someone at kron that jeff adachi's was being sold by a stringer. i'd like to bring someone up from the public defender's investigation unit to explain this memo, if you wouldn't mind. >> good afternoon. i'm the managing attorney of the investigation unit of the public defender's office. thank you, supervisor fewer, for calling this hearing and bringing attention to these issues, many of which impact our clients and we care about very deeply. so on february 24, two days after mr. adachi passed away, an investigator in our office, senior investigator jackson holland who's in the audience today went to the location where mr. adachi was located shortly before his death. and he made contact with a kron 4 news reporter who said a stringer was offering to sell mr. adachi's death report for $2500 a copy. kron could not afford to buy the copy but other news outlets could and did according to this kron 4 news reporter. sh

adachi. so what have you done, what has the police department done since the release of that information, and has anybody been disciplined so far for that release. >> i can answer that question. my division that i oversee includes the administrative and criminal investigations in the department for internal misconduct and internal criminal activity. so that case is currently, actively under investigation in our criminal investigations division. >> okay. , so you can't speak to it. >> no, it is a current and ongoing investigation. >> so you won't discuss any details about whether that was proper or not proper? >> i will say that the reason it is under investigation is because it is believed to be not proper or potentially improper, but is under investigation, so can't provide any conclusions to that at this point. >> okay. >> because we can't have detailed discussion about that particular case, i just want to make clear to you today, and two commanders and to the chief of police, is that when

adachi, and no family should have to go through this. no family should have their loved ones' untimely demise be put out in public. as a department, we apologize to miss adachi for that. i can tell you there is a thorough investigation going on both criminally and administratively, and those that are responsible will be held accountable if in fact the violations occurs as it appears they have. but again, we apologize to the adachi family, because no one should have to go through that. >> supervisor fewer: thank you very much. as most of you know, my husband was a police officer for 38 years. i think the work he did was honorable. i think it is a job that is very difficult, and there is respect amongst the public for the work they do, and trust. you're right. when we see a violation like this, and there are protocols and violations of the protocols that affect the public trust then i think this is a very serious matter for all of us. i think that this is the meaning of why i am going to ask the chair to continue this item to the call of t

jeff adachi was a leader, a trailblazer, and a friend to me and many others. our office is still in the process of deep morning, and matt gonzalez and other leaders in our office have really done a commendable job in facilitating as through this process. [applause]. >> one day after his passing, about 12 topped out 14 hours later, over 100 staff gathered almost spontaneously in our main conference room in the public defender's office. we shared hugs, we shed tears, and we told stories. that was done for jeff and his legacy, it was also done for each other, for all of us in the office, and it was done for the work, because we knew beyond all else, jeff and the people in our office bring it with every fiver in our being for our clients, day in and day out. and to that day spoke volumes about the character of our staff , and why we do what we do day in and day out. four days later, a community vigil happened in san francisco, starting right outside of our offices. thousands of san franciscans gathered for that v

. >>> the widow of san francisco publ publ publ public defender adachi blasted people. >> it was like less than 12 hours, and the police report with pictures, and it was all over the news. we had no privacy. >> this is the first time that adachi's widow has spoke p publicly since his death. he died unexpectedly in february shortly after he was found unconscious in an apartment. the leaked police report included photo the from inside that apartment and details about adachi's private life. supervisors held a public hearing about the leak. a commander formally apologized. supervisors are calling for the finding of the source of the leak and firing that person immediately. >>> scooters off the streets of san francisco but only temporarily. scoot says it's removing its rides from the streets to make updates to the scooter's safe locks. it should keep people from hacking and stealing the scooters. there were 450 stolen between october 2018 and february of this year. the upgraded scooters should be back on san francisco streets early next week. >>> our next story involves a professional comm

[laughter]. >> sixteen years ago, when jeff adachi was sworn in for his first term, i will never forget the words of legendary criminal defence attorney tony sarah. it went something like this. and idealist is the public defender. he was so excited about the possibilities, because only and idealist like jeff could have transformed our office into a national model, could have blazed the trail for criminal justice reform and lead the charge against racial bias in the system. jeff is looking down smiling because today, once again, and idealist is the public defender. [cheers and applause] >> mano is an idealist in the practice of law. i worked side-by-side with mano in the trenches for years, and mano cared for and treated all his clients like his own family. he did everything he possibly could for people. in his trial work, we know it is off the charts. mano developed his craft over the years. he is a believer in the practice of law being a process of growing and learning and developing, and i saw that. he slows down his fast talking. the week following the death of jeff adachi and the subsequent league to police report to the press, i call for this hearing on the policies and protocols within the san francisco police department governing the public release of private citizen information particularly during an active investigation. i was outraged by the inappropriate nature of the leak and extremely concerned about whether laws are broken in the process of the leak. the issue is, at its core, about violation of public trust in our police department. in addition to the leak, police support following the public defender's death, there was a high-profile issue in january od employee publicly presented an individual's rap sheet as -- at a community forum for purely political purposes. this former sfpd employee should never have access to these records to begin with, and certainly this records should not be on public display for political reasons. it is reported this action was in violation of state law. i understand that it is not ordinary for anyone to have immediate access to police reports. i have actually heard th

supervisors in san francisco criticizing police after an incident report related to the death of jeff adachi was improperly released. the day he unexpectedly died news reports surfaced citing a police incident report complete with pictures of the north beach apartment where he died. san francisco supervisors held a hearing looking into the release of that information. police apologize for the release and said the department is conducting an investigation. >>> according to a report the amount of human waste found on the streets of san francisco is growing. in 2011 there were 5500 reports of human waste found on public streets, last year, that increased to 28,000 reports. the chronicle says the amount of human waste on public streets is probably much higher because the numbers only include documented reports. >>> a rally held today by supporters of a filipino human rights advocate who was detained last year. one year ago today he was released after being detained for 28 hours at the airport. he was on his way to discuss repressive conditions in the philippines when the u.s. customs took him in
