adams was approached by samuel adams back in the 1760's, but he kept samuel adams cousin at arm's length. and when samuel adams tried to get john to speak in public and attack the british, and john adams' response in his diary was, that way madness lies. he thought that samuel adams was plotting an american revolution and wanted no part of its. but in 1773 some letters written by the governor, the royal governor of massachusetts were made public. those letters convinced john adams that there was a conspiracy afoot between british officials in american and british officials in london to destroy american liberties. from 1773 on john adams favored independence. i think probably george washington came around to independence in the 1760's, and i think thomas jefferson came around to independence around tustin time as well. but in 1775 john adams, sam adams, george washington, thomas jefferson, all the rest did not dare say it they favored independence. they did not even dare utter the word. they didn't because american unity was absolutely essential for waging this war. if they spoke of indep

adams comes back and suddenly this guy who had ban kid -- adams had never met him before. as far as adams was concerned he, adams was a towering figure of the revolution and this upstart is suddenly appointed treasury secretary. john adams becomes vice president and as vice president he is almost totally excluded from the interpolicy making circle -- the inner policy making circle of washington's government. you all know the famous line adams said about the vice president, the most useless office that ever the imagination of man contrived. it hasn't always been that way. we've had two extraordinarily powerful vice presidents in recent years but it was true that washington did not turn to adams for advice. and within the cabinet, of the three people, jefferson and hamilton, it's clear hamilton doesn't always win but he clearly wins more than any other figure. and so i think there is a certain kind of natural envy and resentment. adams then in 1796 election feels that hamilton has connived to deny him the presidency. this was not entirely his imagination. hamilton did not th

john adams visited. jefferson had even found time to come here when he was writing the declaration of independence. there is a rather romanticized depiction of george washington visiting bartram's garden. you can see, this is the back of the house over there. but it was only really when i followed the footsteps of .. through that appellation mountains in october 2006 that i understood just how important plants had been for the founding fathers. bartram bottom, and very often he had gone to the appellation mountains. i went down to the shenandoah national park. i looked at my map and saw that thomas jefferson, monticello was very nearby. stop and have a look at the home of the writer of the declaration of independence. this is monticello. so when i came up to the mountaintop i was just absolutely astounded because what i saw was really the work of a revolutionary gardener who had crafted his crowns as carefully as he had crafted his work. and monticello brings together the vast beauty of america with the
