john adams was fascinated by cicero. they had models of leadership, of examples of disinterested virtuous behavior. they held up the roman model. but, of course, rome died. and so they're frightened, they don't want to go that way. so that was always a problem. how do you prevent your state from regenerating? the common assumption was that states were like human beings. they were born. they grew up. they matured. and they died. and so how do you hold off that natural process as much as possible? that assessment. but i think our relationship to these founders is much closer. i didn't mention this in the book, but i came across more recently a quotation from lincoln in a speech of 1859 where he talks about we americans and our connection to these founders. and i was thinking, of course, there's been a lot of criticism of the tea party because they seem to have become one with the founders. and the academics have mocked this kind of connection with the founders as if we can connect up with people 200 years in the past. but

adam caskey will check the forecast in a moment. first, the breaking news on the beltway in montgomery county jummy olabanji on the ground. >> good morning. we can tell you that two inside lanes to the left are getting by on the inner loop. i will step out of the way so you can see. where you see the flash of light behind us and signs telling people to get over, that's where the accident has occurred. we've learned from state police and state highway administration officials is around 2:41 this morning there was a vehicle crash with a car and a tractor- trailer. we know the car caught on fire and the there has been a fatality although police and not confirm whether the fatality was from the car or the tractor- trailer. all lanes of the inner loop were closed at one time between connecticut and georgia in bethesda as police investigated. but they have since reopened the two inside lanes and traffic is slowly getting by. it's been a parking lot in the bethesda area for several hours traffic moving very slowly by the scene of the crash
