. >> let's go now to washington, where our correspondent, adam brooks, is there. , you've been briefed on the details of this operation. >> senior administration officials are briefing reporters here in washington overnight. it's a long and complex story, but it goes something like this -- four years ago, we're told, u.s. intelligence started looking very closely at people they believed to be close to osama bin laden, particularly one man, a courier, who they thought was carrying messages for him. two years ago, they say they identified who this man was, and it was this man, according to the version of events we got here in washington, that led them to a compound, a big -walled compound, in the city of abbottabad, not far from islamabad in pakistan. when u.s. analysts started looking at this compound using satellite pictures and all the other tricks of their trade, they discovered that it was very big, had very high walls, it was very private, and it was just the sort of place they thought that you might find somebody who was trying to hide from prying eyes. and ov

joining me from washington is our correspondent adam brooks. is this an unplanned withdrawal by american troops? >> all we know is that the pentagon received a written request from pakistan a couple of weeks ago to reduce its footprint in pakistan. that was the wording of it. now, this refers to a very small number of troops that the united states keeps in pakistan overtly, at least, between 200 and 300 trainers attached to the pakistani military. so it will be some of those who are coming home. obviously, the speculation is immediately turned to the notion that this is in some way pakistan signaling its displeasure with the united states in the wake of the raid that killed osama bin laden, but there is nothing specifically in the request that we know of that makes it clear it is some sort of retaliatory step. that's where we are. >> adam, in your opinion, do you think this is as much for public consumption in terms of the pakistani government to show its people that it's standing up to the united states and possibly the most important operativ

adam brooks has the latest. >> what happened in this compound, in the darkness, amid the roar of theelicopters and the clatter of gunfire? early on, the obama administration indicated that bin laden was armed and his wife was used as a human shield. he resisted capture and was shot, they say. now the administration has retreated from that account. leon panetta, the chief of the cia spoke. was he armed when the navy seals stormed into the room? >> i do not think so. obviously, there were fire fights going on as these guys were making their way up the staircase in that compound. when they got up there, there were some threatening moves that were made that clearly represented a clear threat to our guys. that is the reason they fired. they had full authority to kill him. >> what sort of threatening moves he made are not clear. a woman didn't die in the crossfire, but it was not been a in in's -- a woman did die the crossfire, but it was not to bin laden's wife. >> we will make appropriate decisions as to who will be added to the terrorist list and the no-fly list. >> my guess would be th
