our own adam housley is there with the latest on what's going on. it was an awful tragedy there. >> yeah, david, one that we're close to at fox. this is my hometown, yountville, and it was first built by civil war veterans. and the pathway home, we believe he graduated the program. it was set to treat those with the severe cases the of ptsd: va has given up on most of the men here and it's a private location in a facility here on the actual site of the veterans home of california. yesterday 10:30 a.m. local, the reports were shots were fired here and police responded. there was some gunfire exchanged with the kill earen he went back into the pathway home facility and it's in the middle of the veterans home in california and that's the last time there was contact. that's almost 24 hours ago, roughly 22 hours ago. for hours it went on here. they had at least two hostages, possibly three. ended up being three hostages, plus the gunman himself. unfortunately, later in the evening, maybe 5:30 local time, i first got word from some of the police officers

senior correspondent adam housley has the story from los angeles this morning. >> reporter: the crashay night in tempe at 10:00 at night. the video shows two different angles. one from the windshield and one back towards the person who's the driver but not controlling the car. we stopped the video short. they do as well because of the graphic nature but it shows the woman stepping outside near the crosswalk and look at the first video. this is through the front windshield. you can see out of nowhere appears the woman walking across the street. the 49-year-old woman was struck and killed. the first believed vehicular death from an uber autonomous car in the country. the second video shows the inside and the monitor in the driver's seat. the monitor can take over a car but all of a sudden you'll notice he looks down and looks up in shock as the woman appears in front of the windshield and as the car struck the woman. they don't believe the driver has done anything wrong. they believe this was unfortunately the pedestrian's fault. that's their preliminary review. it goes to a full invest

[gunfire] >> get back, get back. get more ammo. get more ammo! >> bill: all told there were 67 shots fired. >> reporter: the suspect joel armstrong accused of shoot at two men one fatally in a park and then accused of car jacking a car to get away. three people that were inside with the dogs, they all came out with no problem but what's amazing about all this is nobody was hit. 67 rounds between the two sides. seven officers and the suspect. no one was hit but this guy was wanted for a lot and taken into custody and charged with trying to kill seven police officers. >> bill: adam thank you. adam housley there in l.a. >> i continue to feel confident

adam housley is here with more. adam?e, this has been going on for a couple years now in the west, the testing. last night in tempe, arizona -- we have a live look at the intersection. a larger intersection that you'd see in most cities. right here, the curry road, washington street intersection, the self-driving car was in autonomous mode. the driver could have taken over if they saw anything. we're told the woman was outside of the cross walk there when she was struck and killed by the driver. the investigation is ongoing. 49-year-old elaine herzburg was the woman that was struck and killed. uber responded to this via quitter saying our hearts go out to the victim's family. i will say here in california, it was announced too that we're going to start some new types of autonomous planning -- >> trace: so they can overright the car what happened. uber has had -- not uber but other self-driving cars have crashed. >> uber happened last year. had a crash in tempe where that was termed not to be the fault of the autonomous ca

adam housley in yountville, california in the nap p p nappy- napa valley. >> the building was rentedy the group pathway home. it housed veterans with extreme ptsd. we had been here to highlight the program and subsequent highlights, a movie "thank you for your service" that showed this program and a smithsonian, as well. and unfortunately a man who used to be a part of the program came here 10:30 opening fire, killing himself. as part of this program, we knew two of them, we most recently talked a couple of months ago about coming up and doing a follow-up here, jennifer golick, a clinical director. christine lobar was 48 years old. the executive director. jennifer gonzalez, 29 years old a clinical psychologist. the three women were killed by the gunman who had been here for ptsd. we believed he'd left without completing the program. we covered this program four years ago because of the extreme success they'd been having. many of the men who'd come through this program and they were going to start a women's program as well, had come here after the va had basically given up on them. th
