going to msnbc's adam reece in charleston. adam? >> good morning to you.in about a half hour. i want to show you the front door and people arriving not only from charleston, but around the region to remember the nine lives lost. it's a healing process. they say today here in the holy city their hearts are heavy, but they will get through this as best they can. i had a chance to talk to the mayor who has been in office almost 40 years. here's what he had to say. >> they say this morning they are going to try to move on. how do you move on? >> you move on by working to make the future better. we make sure and we met with families yesterday, we are never going to leave them as long as they are around. we are here to support them. we helped them through this and the funerals and we are raising money and all that. we are never not at their side. >> this is just a tremendous out pouring of grief. when i was done speak, he told me off camera everyone he talks to, they just cannot stop crying. steve? >> adam reece in charleston. we will be monitoring that service

joining me from chicago, msnbc reporter adam reece.nding on the former speaker as he arrived. what happens now as we wait for the hearing? >> reporter: thomas, good afternoon. he arrived about 15 minutes ago behind me and to an absolute crush of cameras and getting out and almost fell over because of the crush. he was asked as he entered the courthouse if he had a sexual relationship with one of his students. he did not respond. he entered the courthouse just like anyone else. he went through the metal detector, put the belongings through the x ray machine and he likely arrived an hour early to be processed with fingerprints and a mug shot. the hearing begins in an hour and it will be a very simple hearing and read the charges and enter a plea and assuming he pleads not guilty he will be able to leave on his own recognizance recognizance. thomas? >> what can you tell us about his attorney? >> reporter: this is a very experienced washington-based trial attorney. thomas greene. he handled the criminal cases before and represented members

joining me now from charleston south carolina is msnbc correspondent adam reece. spoke last night and what was the central message? >> there were church leaders there were politicians, thousands gathered, they joined the family members of the victims in song and prayer as you mentioned, each one of them holding up a rose remembering all of the people that were lost in this senseless tragedy. >> adam i'm struck as we look at the images at how inter interracial -- >> i can tell you the group here, black, white, they just set up an impromptu service here. priests, people speaking. lots of emotion. lots of tears, lots of flowers. a lot of crying. very raw emotion, melissa. >> but and maybe we'll take a listen a bit to some of what we heard, some of what you heard last night. >> if that young man thought he was going to divide this community or divide this country with his racial hatred we are here today and all across america, resoundingly saying he immeasurably failed. >> and i want to just point out again how interracial the services were that mayor joe was there and

but we have a ton to cover before any of that happened so let's bring in adam reece outside the courthouse. what can we expect? >> reporter: good afternoon. the hearing has begun. they have just been called to order. we expect it to be a very short hearing. reading the charges to mr. hastert, he'll enter a plea. likely not guilty and set a date for another hearing. there will be some discussion about discovery going forward. and then he'll likely be processed if he wasn't already processed before. arrived about an hour early and possible he had the fingerprints and mug shot taken early and then released. he arrived as i said about an hour and 15 minutes early to a crush of media. he entered the building just like anybody else would. he went through the metal detector. put the belongings through the x-ray machine and then wanded up and upstairs and a normal process for an arraignment and very unusual situation considering who it is that's being arraigned. >> thank you for that report and bring in pete williams. pete, what can we expect next here? >> reporter: well, just a couple of notes. f
