other members include congressman pete aguilar, jamie raskin and adam schiff, zoe lofgren and stephanie other five lawmakers of the committee. joining us white house correspondent for politico and co-author of "the playbook" eugene daniels and an msnbc contributor. first of all congrats on your recent engagement and secondly, what, as we see these committee names come out including the very polarizing pick of lizz cheney, what dynamic does this set up for the select committee aiming to be nonpartisan? >> exactly. i think that she is trying to -- the speaker is trying to recreate what she wanted with this kind of 9/11-style commission, right, something that was nonpartisan, bipartisan, something that could be beyond reproach, something where it is focused on the facts and the whitewashing or what's happened -- what happened on january 6th and that's happened since then isn't a part of this committee. that's something she's been extremely focused on this entire time. that's it. they're trying to recreate this idea that this would be something that would be accepted by most people as fact,

adam schiff is one of those people as well. and you have bennie thompson who's going to lead this committee. so, listen, i think no matter what republicans were going to say this was all partisan, they blocked the nonpartisan sort of bipartisan committee because they wanted this opportunity to mudline nancy pelosi, to undermine this investigation. but i think you can still get a serious and credible investigation with the folks who are on this committee. >> just to add, i think nia hit the nail on the head. if you go back, the reason where we are, generally speaking, with this is because mitch mcconnell decided that they didn't want to play ball within a true bipartisan independent commission. it's the only reason that there's a select committee now. all the rest is sort of the thing that if you spend time in washington, you see, which is partisan posturing. when mccarthy chose those five people, you knew it was likely to become something of a circus if you've watched jim jordan perform, and i use the word perform on purpose, i

joining us, now, congressman adam schiff. member of the select committee and chairman of the house intelligence committee. so, chairman schiff, this house gop resolution that failed tonight, which demanded speaker pelosi seat mccarthy's picks for the committee. is this anything other than just, you know, gamesmanship by kevin mccarthy? >> no, that's all it is and i think you summed up, both, mccarthy and the -- the lack of any dedication to principle, ideology, anything but maintenance of his position. this is just more of the same effort at distraction. um, and i think you also made a very important point, at the outset, which is at the end of the day, what this insurrection was about was about a large group of people unwilling to accept the results of a democratic election and willing to use violence to have their way. and that is a very dangerous sign that our democracy is on thin ice. and one of the things that i hope that we will shed light on is how our country got to this point, as well as how we got to january 6th. bu
