adam shapiro joins us with the latest developments. out 28-year-old pilot andreas lubitz. the reason investigators are saying he deliberately crashed the plane, the door to the cockpit was locked. you can see in airbus training videos. there's a procedure to override the system. you go to the electronic system, the other pilot punches in the code, you should be able to go in. the pilot in the cockpit can attempt to override the original lock. he stayed in control of the plane. brought about this tragic. now, itragedy.in the united stad or stewardess has to go into the cockpit to prevent someone from getting locked out. that was not the case in europe until two hours ago. european airlines will follow the same rules as the american airlines and require two people in cockpit when one leaves for whatever reason. charles, as i go, you should know this is not the first time that a pilot has locked out his copilot and crashed the plane. ethiopiaian airlines. in that case, the plane landed in geneva. the pilot wanted to leave his country. esse

cheryl: joining me now with the latest from the crash investigation, fox business' adam shapiro. do we know at this hour, adam? >> reporter: as you say, they've recovered one of the recording devices. that device will be key in helping explain why this flight, which took off -- and this was the subsidiary of rough tan sa germanwings which is a no-frills discount line -- from barcelona to dusseldorf took off roughly 9:55 a.m. this morning, and then at about 10:53 dis appeared -- disappeared from the radar screen. it reached its cruising altitude, and within a minute of reaching that, began a descent in which it actually came down 14,000 in six minutes. now, different aviation analysts have said that kind of descent is nothing abrupt that you might see that in the normal course of flight. this is early in the flight, it's not as if they're coming in for a landing. there's an emergency airport from not far where the plane went off radar in marseilles, but they don't know what this flight might have encountered. the u.s. has said there's no indication of some kind of terrorist attack

our adam shapiro has been following the story. joins me now with the latest. >> it's important to know that the regulations in europe over the number of people in the cockpit are different up until about an hour ago. than in the united states. the european union the zone actually decided that the airlines now will do what the united states already does. when a pilot leaves the cockpit, a steward or stewardess has to go in. always have to have two people in the cockpit to prevent people from being locked out. that was how it always was but not in europe. the locking mechanism. we know from the investigators. the pilot who was locked out. was trying to get back in. on the airbus aircraft, you can punch in an electronic code to unlock the door. but a pilot in the cockpit can override that system. so that's something that's being addressed. finally, gerri, this is something you should know not the first time the pilot has been locked outside the cockpit and the person inside crashed the plane. happened in mozambique airlines in 2013.
