[applause] >> thank you for that very nice introduction. and i am grateful to politics and prose for having me here today. i'm going to talk a little bit just about how it happened that i wrote a book, because i'm sure many of my friends are sort of still in disbelief that this happened. and also why i decided to write this book. so in 2007 i own a 17 year-old car that my friends nicknamed the rust-tang. billy way you could get in and out of my car was to climb through the window. but i loved that car. in spite of the fact that i had to use a screwdriver to unlock my seatbelt, i was never going to stop driving my car, except that one day i was driving home and i was going down georgia avenue and that's about half a mile from my apartment and my car just all of a sudden caught on

discusses watergate with bob woodward on "after words," and our prime time programming continues with adele levine who recalls her time as a physical therapist at walter reed army medical center. that all happens tonight on c-span2's booktv. >> booktv asked, what are you reading this summer? >> i try to keep a lot of different things going, and some of the books i'm reading is "lincoln's boys," the secretaries' impact on the administration. reading "founding of brothers" about how they actually did some things that are off the normal record, so that was really interesting to me. one that is sort of interesting in the latter context is a week called "roosevelt's secret war," and it's about the starting of our international espionage and how he started that in a real hodgepodge kind of way. so that's made an interesting read especially in light of all the things going on currently with the nsa and cia and the things that we have, pertinent perspective. another one i'm reading is "obama's enforcer," probably my most political book of the scherr, current political -- summer. but i think it goes

i am adel banks. i want to differentiate between what is new this year with your program and what you had before. i have heard about something related to baptism to bible, for instance. is that something you have done for a while? and is that something else? >> there are a couple of very new initiatives. one is called [speaking spanish ] taking a love offering for every child baptized or chrissened. a 529 plan can be set up for $25. it doesn't have to be something huge but we say every child should be presented with a bible and and a college education. we believe it is widening the parallel course should be an intersection. >> that's one program that is brand-new that we are instituting. another quick one we will talk about is a report card prayer initiative. again, a grassroots initiative. we are asking parents to make problems of their children's report cards and turn them in when the offerings go around because we believe those are offerings. we want the congregation to pray over them and the child

i wanted to look at how real people into the computer and internet adelle innovation really happened in the digital age. was something that came out of working with steve jobs and before that bill gates to say who made that type of person, how did they end up being successful? so the book is not just about singular people but about teams, but collaboration. one of the things that i discovered in doing this book is that real innovation comes from great teams, not just for a great leaders. >> host: would it surprise you? >> guest: the importance of connecting the arts to topology. the importance of the liberal arts and the engineering. it begins with a lovely suit is father was a great poet lord byron to of lord byron. she loved poetry to but her mother wanted to be a mathematician. she became of greek mathematician. by the end she is able to combine the notion of poetry at the notion of math and she comes up with the idea of a computer program. the first person to understand that these calculating machines that do numbers will also be able to read patterns and to words or music. and s

and shoot -- if i was adele levine. she's probably in her 80s and she had to meet his able and then she walked away. when it opened the envelope there was a letter from her and she said that she was a retired army physical therapist. when she read my article in the post, she knew she had to come to the hospital and hand deliver it so that i would know how much it meant to her to read about it. when i read her letter, i realized at that moment that actually was right, that this was a story that people wanted to hear. and also that i was the right one to do it, that i would be able to write about walter reed in a humane and humorous way with the insight that may be an outside writer would not have. so walter reed shut down, and i was part of the group that transferred to the new walter reed at bethesda naval hospital. and i wrote with the book. before it turned of the manuscript into my publisher, i kind of ran up the chain of command. i had some of my coworkers read it, and my supervisors, and then i had to give it to th
