that's the statement from the ceo of the adl. let's go to pittsburgh right now where we're hearing how police officers responded to this mass murder at this house of worship. cnn jean casarez is on the scene for us. it all started just before 10:00 a.m. this morning. >> reporter: that's right, wolf. we're learning more about the timeline now. i want to tell you, one of the victims, a 70-year-old male who had multiple injuries to his torso is currently right now undergoing his second surgery of the day. he is in critical condition, but cnn has confirmed that at 9:49 this morning, the suspect in all of this who was on social media a lot professing his hatred of those of the jewish faith made his final post saying among other things, quote, i'm going in, and at that point at 9:54, five minutes later, the call was made from the synagogue saying there was an active shooter. at 9:55, the officers were dispatched and what we're learning, that a pittsburgh police officer was the first person to go into that synagogue and officers are say

when the adl was founded, it was au around the time of leo frank lynched in the south.d guilty and what amounted to a sham trial of killing a young girl. when the governor intervened in that landmark case and clearly not due process, commuted the sentence from the death penalty to life imprison. the mob so enraged they tore leo frank from the jail cell and they hung him from a tree. and as often happened with lynchings in the south, they barbecued, they took pictures and sold the postcards as souvenirs. the adl founded literally in that moment and we have been fighting ever since. >> you go back to those times. looking at the late '20s and early '30s in germany, the jews said we're in great positions in government, in universities, in the arts. there were lawyers, musicians and somehow they were motivated against. right? hitler created an otherness about jews. is this about ignorance or hatred? >> my grandfather was one of those jews. my grandfather's a survivor from germany. my great grandfather served in the first world war and if you asked my grandfather as a young m

. >> right, because in concert with that, the adl is saying a 57% increase in anti-semitic behavior in the last year, all while you were writing the book. so you know, there are a multiple of facets here, but in your view, what brought us to this point here in 2018? >> it's a combination of things. i think there's been divisive rhetoric in our country, and it didn't start in the past two or three years, but it really started, i would say, maybe when president obama was elected. a rise of right-wing anti-semitism. at the same time, there's left-wing anti-semitism, and anti-semitism is a conspiracy theory. when something is happening that you don't like, you have to find a group to blame it on. and jews, anti-semitism is called the longest hatred for good reason. it's been around for well over 2,000 years. and people fall back on it. and you know, this crazy man, this awful, awful crazy man who did this, but he didn't operate out of a vacuum. >> right. >> there was the history of anti-semitism and the rhetoric that he's heard. >> and a megaphone that since we have now since learned there

the adl has been tracking and monitoring all forms of violence extremism for several decades now.een a precipitous incline in the amount of both anti-semitic incidents as well as all forms of other extremism manifesting themselves domestically across the country. while the numbers we see in anti-semitic spikes in 2017 are in fact shocking, they're not surprising because we have seen this continued uptick. >> so again, where is that uptick coming from? >> really a combination of things. for starters, in the past several years, we have seen a normalization of hate in this country. where extremism of all forms has really entered the main stage. second, the frequency in which this information is disseminated on social media platforms and alternative social media platforms like gab that are created for the sole intent and purpose to distribute and convene extremists of all forms to share their ideas and communicate with one another. the normalization of hate coupled with the speed in which this information is shared on social media is part of this really combustible mix. >> there's a l

you may have heard my conversation earlier with john than greenblat who's the head of the adl who talkedut the rise of hate crime incidents. he gave me a statistic that was pretty sobering. he said in 2016 it has risen by their count 34% from the previous 15 years or so where he just used his hand to say it was sort of in a downward trend, if you will. 2017 even higher, 57% of an increase in hate crimes. speak to that. is that the kind of -- are those the kind of stats that you find as well that you research ask that you talk about at cal state san bernardino? >> very similar. actually, his research is 57% increase in incidents which include non-criminal, but let's be clear here. this is the worst attack on the jewish community probably in american history, certainly as long back as we have data. this is the worst, and one of the worst attacks on a house of worship. the sutherland springs, texas, attack was more poernlersonally motivated to family members. bottom line, what the adl saw, they've been keeping this data since '79, and that was the biggest increase in all hate incidents whic

i was looking at one statistic from the adl.d anti-semitic incidents in every state of the of the union for tt time since 2010. where are we at in. >> we're in a very, very dangerous situation in our country. we've seen a big increase in the number of hate groups in recent years. we've seen a big increase in the number of hate crimes. as the adl reported, we had a big increase in the number of anti-semitic incidents last year. president trump, unfortunately, has energized the radical right. and you know, fray add soshl nor frayed social norms in our country. when you create the kind of sphere he does, i'm afraid some ugly things happen. one thing it's important to understand is that anti-semitism underlies the modern white supremacist movement. you heard it in charlottesville where people were screaming jew will not replace us. this notion of white genocide that jew are behind you know, the browning of america. so it's a complex phenomenon. and we're living in really difficult times, richard. >> all right. thank you so much. i a

>> you know, at the adl, if you're fighting the front line on traihate, you have to confro google and facebook and all the big brands. we opened up a center in silicon last year, and i think there's two pieces to this puzzle. so number one, we need to be engaging with industry and thinking about not just better policies for the platforms but better products for the users. and how do we use technology and rea reimagine the al ga rhythms and turn down the volume to make it harder to hear and find. so we need to engage the companies to engineer better products. secondly, we need policymakers to get involved. the law needs to consider new phenomena like swatting and doxing and cyber hate and to identify these as issues that require policy solutions, as well. so we need both our policymakers and product designers to get engaged in fighting the problem. >> david, what about these issues, particularly with the tree of life synagogue, which has been revealed once again, this guy had 21 or 22 guns, one of them was an ak-47, a military-style weapon. is there anything you think that could change

. >> the adl says anti-semitic incidents in the u.s. have been on the rise. your community, in pittsburgh? >> i don't think there's been fear of an ante sell ttisel s- incident. we try to train everybody so they stay safe and secure. >> what are you going to do now? i assume you're going to intensify security as jewish community centers, jewish schools, synagogues throughout pittsburgh, throughout the area. >> you know, we have a jewish community security director that we brought on board almost two years ago. and while he's very busy today with everything that's happening, that's what he'll be looking at in the days to come. what we might need to do or beef up. >> president trump says he will be visiting pittsburgh soon. what can he say to reassure the jewish community? >> yeah, i have actually heard the rumors about president trump coming. i haven't watched any news all day. you know, i think it's just important that the federal government be with us to help with what they do now. there are security grants that come through where the jewish community is abl

the adl found between july of 2016 and january of 2018 the use of the term jew and derogatory terms for and dra matly increased on gab. what's the message to people in your community, people back at your childhood synagogue about how to combat this? >> wow, is it tough. and attacks themselves are up 70%. you knew from the moment of the shooting you were going to go online and see something disgusting like this, but from law enforcement's perspective, seeing it -- you can see it all retrospectively, but seeing it in advance and being able to distinguish who is going to be the -- do the shooting is really very, very challenging. for the community, though, i think it's a lesson about trying to convert tragedy to resolve, to constructiveness. pittsburgh is well-suited. it's a decent and cohesive community, but for you, i think it's reeling, and it will be that way far couple weeks. but community leaders are coming together with -- to try to be -- look -- be forward looking and comforting. >> harry, ben, thank you. let's keep up the conversation later in the week. we are out of time for this

amy: we are speaking to you in this aftermath of the pittsburgh massacre, what the adl has describede worst anti-semitic attack in the united states in u.s. history. if you could comment, as you look north, but this is your country, the united states, what happened this weekend and share your thoughts? at the socialook media history of the murderer who entered the synagogue in pittsburgh, you see something much different than the social media history of the individual accused of sending pipe bombs to various democratic politicians and media newsrooms. that person, the pipe bomber, seems to clearly have been directly inspired by and formed by trump and the trump movement, whereas the killer who slaughtered -- slaughtered jews in the pittsburgh synagogue is the more traditional, neo-nazi hard-core kkk white supremacist who sees donald trump not as an ally, but as a tool of the jews & his own. i think he is more on the fringes of american political life. so i think the attempt to try and blame trump or trump's rhetoric for this attack is a much harder case to make than for the pipe bomb
