i supported -- the reason i was bringing up the adl dinner is judy shepard was one of the honorees, and it's the tenth anniversary of the matthew shepard hate crimes bill that went into law nationally. one of the early votes i made when i was first elected to congress was voting for the matthew shepard hate crimes act. but certainly we want to destigmatize for victims of hate crimes. and make sure that they know that they have legal avenues to pursue. and i do agree with the concept of hate crimes, because, again, when it's a crime against somebody, it's a lot more than just the actual crime. we always use the example of burning a cross on the lawn of an african-american family. it's not just a simple arson issue. it's clearly -- you have to read into that crime, both the intent and the effect, on scaring and terrifying african-americans, not only in that neighborhood, but in that community and nationally. so i absolutely agree with where we have prosecution for crimes that are specifically directed at members of minority groups that we have an appropriate law enforcement response. >> w
