private sector payroll rose more than expected in december according to adp.hat is a substantial rise from november and pointed to continue robustness in the labor market. hospitality led the way in job growth. speaking to cnbc, the adp representative said it picked up in the holiday season, but manufacturing is lagging. >> we saw december consistent with the strong holiday travel season and retail season. people were moving around and buying things and going places. we saw a return to the leisure and hospitality. that fueled that industry and fueled small firms which over indexedin that sector. if we see above that trend in 2024, that is a good sign for the labor market. the manufacturing is a note of caution. we still did not see retail hiring as strong as before the pandemic. we are still low compared to 2019. >> the number of americans filing for jobless claims fell to the lowest level since october. down 18,000 to 202,000. continuing claims fell to 1.85 million. the latest signs of the labor market will help shrug off recession fears, but will raise quest

we have adp saying according to adp, we are at no longer a risk of a price spiral. adp showed the bump in wages was 5.4 for those who stayed in their jobs and 8% who moved their jobs. haidi: vonnie quinn with the numbers. our next guest says despite what we have seen across the tech space and tech equities in particular it has been a bad week for some of the magnificent seven like apple. despite the valuation gains have seen in the previous year, she is still constructive on the magnificent sector -- the magnificent seven and the wider sector. we have seen a second warning when it comes to apple and that has taken the heat out of that stock. you have been consistent in terms of leaning into the depths for these stocks. >> good evening and thank you for having me. i have been consistently adding to these stocks and i like when they pull back a little bit. if you look at last year and you look at the nasdaq, the mac seven, the moves have been anywhere from 50 to to 50%. that sounds great and maybe overdone to scented if you go back to 2022, they had a terrible year. m

with the adp report, here is mike mckee. mike:. it is a disappointing adp report.o adp. that is significantly lower than the 151,000 economists thought adp would find. most of the employment is in the service-providing sector. 77,000 of the chops there. 30,000 in goods producing. 2000 of in manufacturing. was tibet's in construction. 22,000 there. it looks like the categories of jobs that have been looking for help have been the ones that basically absorb the new workers. small establishments, 25,000 jobs. 61,000 in large establishments. in terms of their pay numbers, job stayers got a 5.2 percent increase. changes, 7.2%. we are still ahead of them placed -- ahead of inflation, but not getting the kind of jobs a lot of people think we are going to get for the payrolls report on friday. lisa: not a lot of drama in markets as they parse through that. i am curious what your take away is for friday, for nonfarm payrolls. i feel like we are on a broken record. we ask you this every time adp comes out. what predictive features does adp have for nonfarm payrolls? mike: it

stocks are trying to claw back gains after those adp numbers earlier today.little is tracking the moves. abigail: up about .2% for the s&p 500. breaking for the future say four--- futures a four-day losing streak. let's see whether these gains whole. they are pretty small. the bloomberg dollar index could be a key driver. up for the fifth day in a row, the longest since earlier last fall. you have new york crude down 1.8%. inventories for oil were fine, but inventories for gasoline showed an inventory built. that appears to be weighing on oil at this point. then the vix not doing all that much, still at 813 handle, but close to a 14 handle. pretty complacent given the volatility we have seen recently. if we switch up the board we are going to see one of the big drivers for last year's rally, and that of course is the fact that the 10 year yield basically went from 5% all the way down to 3.70%, now keeping higher, trying to get back about 4%. if this move higher continues that could pressure stocks, on the idea that liquidity could be coming out, or the idea t

the adp data was not great. adp data is notoriously not correlated with the establishment survey that is coming out later this week. it did seem to move the market, because it was a noticeably weaker number. we will have to watch what happens there. i expect the unemployment rate will go up and i think it will end this year higher than the fed's stop clock this december. that is what will happen and it will necessitate lower interest rates. since we don't have those lower interest rates, even though the two year treasury was down 4% with the fed funds rate at 538, that is a pretty negative yield curve from the fed funds two year. it is not meaningless. this will have an impact and the fred -- fed staying higher for longer, i have talked about this for months now, is going to be bad for the banking system. i noticed, we had a little baking problem today, although i take it is isolated. >> i want to talk about that and i am glad you brought it up. the level of concern you would have today around the regional banki

the ten-year yield has risen after the strong adp yesterday. >> it appears to be betting on the over.s you said, there's a range that people are looking at here. anything over 200 or 225 puts the fed back on the table. thing anything below 100 puts recession on the table. think i the number that is more important is the average hourly earnings. we have not broken below 4% in years. the markets were priced for perfection for the end of the year and now dialing back rate cut fears. jittering this year. >> we were talking about snapping the nine-week win streak. you are telling your clients to look at equal weighted index. the s&p and the other is one i haven't heard of which is the qqqe. why is the equal weighted indexes are the place to be? >> the magnificent seven stocks had a great run. actually, they just stabilized the challenges from the year before. they ended up being 30% of the s&p 500. they are now a funding currency. nobody wanted to sell those into year end because you needed to show you owned them. maybe you deferred the tax ramifications into 2024 and now you are selling a

lisa: adp matters. mattering more than nonfarm payrolls?u think about where the weaknesses in hiring, more has been among small businesses. adp samples more small businesses in real-time the nonfarm payrolls. we could get some of that revision downside later on in the nonfarm payrolls report. lisa: you have these varying measurements and disparate kinds of economies that are moving at different paces. how valid is it to look at the payrolls number to get a gauge of where the economy is? and alon -- anna wong says maybe we are in the recovery already. sarah: we have been in a rolling recession. we have not been in a labor market recession. maybe the housing market was in a bit of a recession. equipment investment. i don't think we can look back and say the labor market was in a recession in 2023. the market is still strong. jobless claims are very low. the jolts data showed openings are coming down. quits rates are coming down but layoffs have barely inched up. the labor market, the kiefer in an overall economic recession -- key for an overa
