abc's adrienne bankert is on one of them in the hudson river. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: we're on the coastal cutter moving through the hudson. look behind me here. it's actually traversing through a thick layer of ice, coating the river. now, unlike this vessel, we know that other boats are having a hard time getting through it. they're getting stuck. so what this does is the crew makes sure that they make a path through this frozen river so that commercial vehicles like tugs and barges can actually make it through. it's very, very cold and icy. they have been out here for days, since monday, making sure that it's safer for these vessels to traverse the river. amazingly, it can move through about 20 inches of ice no problem and break up about three feet of ice using a ramming technique. it's very, very impressive, robin. but again, these temperatures, cold, icy, really have a heart for this crew having to deal with such tough conditions. >> sounds like they've been mighty busy responding to calls, adrienne. >> that's right, robin. we'
