turning to adrienne broaddus with more. good morning. do we know the reason why? are investigators saying, adrienne? >> reporter: good morning to you, don. investigators say this shooting was not random and they say it was targeted. they say at least two of the three people involved were related to gangs. i want to take you through what we do know. an 18-year-old has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder as well as attempted murder. that suspect is in custody. this, after shooting and killing two teens at a school or charter school, it was described as a charter school, by the police in des moines for at-risk youth. more on what police told us. listen in. >> it was not random. there's nothing random about this. it was certainly a targeted incident. as far as motive, that's something we are going to try to figure out. >> we've got to get everybody around the table and start finding solutions to this, because the police cannot do it all, and again, we're good at what we do, but that doesn't give families any peace. that doesn't give the friends of these

cnn's adrienne broaddus joins us. this is an incredible turn of events.o we know about damar hamlin's condition right now? >> reporter: the bills tweeting today in addition toe that new you just shared, they're saying damar hamlin continues to breathe on his own, and his neurological function is, quote, excellent. all of this after he suffered a cardiac arrest on monday night. we are outside of the university of cincinnati medical center, and if you notice behind me, there is the focal point, i will say of the sidewalk, which leads to the hospital. there's a helmet created using balloons, and people have been stopping by throughout the day leaving messages of hope and healing behind us. doctors treating damar says these magnificent milestones we've seen over the last few days go back to what happened on the football field monday night. those team -- or that team of medical responders were able to realize something was seriously wrong quickly, and they were right at damar's side. listen in to some of that audio. >> i don't like how he went down. >> you're

thank you, adrienne broaddus from cincinnati this morning. >> a lot of unknowns. but cnn medical analyst dr. jonathan reiner is with us and beat reporter for the matt porino who was in the stadium last night covering all of this. matt, let me begin with you, what was it like to be there, what did it feel like, what did you see? >> i felt like it was a scene out of a movie. when it first happened, i covered the game live, i saw damar make the tackle, and bounce up, and so i went down to tweet what happened on the play and when i got back up to look at the field, he was down and somebody was down and i thought it couldn't have been damar, i had just seen him pop back up and replay plays and it is a scene where as a recorder to look at the officials on the field and how they're reacting to the situation. i saw one, a paramedic or emt on a walkie-talkie and you could see the urgency in her face. and then all of a sudden you pan to the players who have been around this game their entire life, they have seen big time hits, it is a very violent sport, and just the reacti

let's begin with adrienne broaddus. adrienne, are things get back to normal there this morning? >> reporter: hello, bianna. things are getting back to normal. travelers passing through chicago o'hare will experience delays and cancellations. if they stop at the information board, they will see boarding. that's a nice sign for folks leaving the airport. there's also other indications that there have been technology issues. here in chicago there are about 500 delayed flights and cancellations standing at 109. that is according to the chicago department of aviation, and this is a reflection of the big picture. if you take a look at what airports are experiencing across the country, according to flightaware, more than 7,300 delays and 1,100 cancellations. we spoke with a father and daughter earlier this morning. they told us their flight from nashville to chicago was delayed by 2 1/2 hours. he says they're traveling to brussels. he said intentionally he built a ten-hour layover in case something were to happen. this is based on things we have seen happening with air travel he says i

adrienne broaddus is live with us in cincinnati for more.octors are saying his condition is improving? what are they saying? >> reporter: that is the last update we received from the buffalo bills saying damar's condition improved yesterday and overnight prior. we know he is still in the intensive care unit in critical condition. we spoke with his family member, his uncle, dorian, earlier in the week. and when i talked to him, he shared with me that his nephew was turned over on his stomach. that was a move he says by doctors to help alleviate the pressure on his lungs. he also told us the next step was doctors wanted to get damar breathing on his own. it's unclear this morning where damar's medical team is in that process. we did hear from the nfl's troy vincent. he was on a zoom call speaking and addressing members of the media. as he spoke his voice trembled. he said, in part, there is no playbook when it comes to managing these real-life threatening events. he said, this game of football is guided by best practices and policies, but the

adrienne broaddus is standing by at the hospital where hamlin is being treated. what is the very latest? >> reporter: kate, at this hour, he is on a ventilator. fans are used to him fighting on the field to help lead his team to victory. but right now that 24-year-old is fighting for his life. the first monday night football game of 2023 between the buffalo bills and cincinnati bengals ended abruptly in tragedy after damar hamlin's tackle on bengal's wide receiver tee higgins. you see hamlin standing briefly and then collapsing on the field. >> now another bills player is down. >> when i saw that young man fall to the ground the way he did, it -- it felt like my soul had left my body. >> reporter: within minutes after hamlin's collapse, medical staff started cpr on him. right on the field. >> usually you see players gather around a player but when they saw them start doing chest compressions, you saw the reaction of the players being distraught and emotional. the kind of thing we don't see on the football field. >> he suffered a cardiac arrest. his heartbeat was
