san francisco has built 937 adus since 2019. the san francisco planning department acknowledged that adus are easier to build in san jose, with large, lots more easily lending themselves to modular structures and pre-approved designs. here's one example of the challenges san francisco faces. notice how higashi and kieran's properties have separate entrances to their adus. san francisco homes usually have no access to the rear yard from the street, and there isn't always room to build them. but the city is allowing some homeowners to convert a garage into a small adu accessory dwelling units, you're right, are fully independent dwelling, so yeah, they have their own kitchen, their own bathroom. ryan o'neill is the founder of the website how to adu. he says california is on the cutting edge of the adu movement. >> 1 in 5 units last year for new home construction. >> we're actually adu permits in the state of california. >> that's really exciting because that's incremental homes. >> it's a lot of housing that wouldn't exist otherwi

a lot of people upset with the company that builds tiny homes or adus. bay area homeowners tell us they forked over thousands of dollars only to have that money. and the workers go missing. no tiny home was ever built or completed. tonight, we're learning that company is going belly up. it should be a finished home with my mother in law and my grandma in here. construction suddenly stopped for people like katie lucas in san leandro. she was paying a hefty amounts on a payment schedule, but then the subcontractors walked off the job because they said the main contractor, the gc, called anchored tiny homes, stopped paying them. we also talked with homeowners in walnut creek, newark, wood city, pleasant hil, saratoga, san jose and hayward, who tell us similar stories. today we heard from the ceo of anchor tiny homes. his name is colton paulus. he declined to speak on camera, but he shared a letter saying, quote, anchor tiny homes and its franchise arm have suspended operations and are currently evaluating bankruptcy options. joining us this evening is our c

and as you can see, my adu is not even 50% done at this point. a similar bind for allen in oakland.e plywood box in our backyard, he calculates. his family pre-paid at $80,000 for work that no one did. they haven't told us where our money went down in cupertin. here's what gorizia has to show for her money. nothing. zero, she says she paid 32 grand for designs and permits that stalled. i just want my money back. we've talked with other homeowners in newark, redwood city, pleasant hills, saratoga, san jose and hayward who tell similar stories. we're all holding the bag. the contractor state license board confirmed for us it's investigating. it identified nine consumer complaints so far where a probable violation has occurred. and if proven, would present a risk of harm to the public. the customer facebook group suggests more angry people in and around sacramento. we contacted anchor tiny homes. it did not respond. customers shared a recent message in which the ceo said he was finalizing deals with investors. he wrote, we have no intention of leaving any jobs unfinished or any contrac
