just unfortunately, recently last week, oakland's bicycle is a pedestrian advisory commission said it'soing to be dismantling the slow streets program. do you think that is the right thing to do? >> we're not dismantling it. with hitting it to adjust to the current conditions. we're going to be making slow streets permanent where appropriate, but people are going back to work now. cars are back on the streets, and so it's not as safe to have the number of slow streets that we rolled out with such urgency at the beginning of the pandemic when we were all dying to get out of our homes, but in a socially distanced manner to see our neighbors, but see them safely. and we're not rolling back a flex street oakland is blessed with the best weather in the world. i mean, look outside right now, and that's why outdoor dining, really reimagining our public common, that is here to stay, and we're going to continue to double down on many of the lessons that we did learn during the pandemic. >> let's turn to another topic, the sports front. we have so me sports fans here. there has been another step

serving on the presidential appointed advisory commission on public diplomacy.t is the most important element of the u.s. response to this invasion right now in your field? >> good evening. first, it's very good news hearing reports about swift and the movement on swift. that's something ukrainians were pushing for and many others. i think it's a punitive measure that has teeth in it and glad to see that's moved forward. but at this time, i think it us essential and crucial given the fight that ukrainians are waging here, that the military assistance matters utmost, it's of primary concern and our primary desire and objective for ukrainians to get it. what they are requesting our javelin missiles, they want to be able to bring down aircraft and also antitank missiles and they've been pushing for javelins and more. the good news here is a number of countries that have stepped up on this, the dutch germans promised and not only promised but have actually moved to get the missiles into the hands of ukrainians and i think it was also good news today it was announced

china commission, a senior advisory commission to the congress, a standing commission on the chinese-american relationship. we did our report last week. unanimous. it is totally bipartisan. china is at or near an initial invasion capability of taiwan. this was one of the scenarios in the strategy commission. every secretary -- i came to washington 27 years ago. every secretary has devoted himself to reforming the pentagon. i'm all for it. okay? it is not going to change the basic issue. we need to do a whole lot of different things, but in my opinion, we are going to continue accepting risk at far too high a level to the homeland and the vital national interests unless we get realistic about the top line. i -- you know, beyond that, i mean, i love the emphasize on innovation and modernization. i did a chapter -- we did a report a couple years ago on china's advanced weapons programs. i think it is tremendous that we are doing that. if i had to choose i would continue that, but i think we need hulls in the water and we need air frames and we need them in and out. >> secretary kendall, you want

country, at least at the state level because that is what i follow, there is a number of commissions popping up and advisory boards where they are trying to bring in a lot of different types of folks across the community to understand what we could have done better, what should we be investing in to prepare for the next time around. that is data but it goes beyond data, to commune occasions and messaging, to understanding your capacity and your ability to serve, making sure you have the partnerships in place to pull in what you need when you need it. a lot those are created during covid-19 and not in advance. back to the point of wouldn't i love a global surveillance system where we are going to know across the world when there is an outbreak and where we will all be, i do feel like that is a long ways away and i'm very practical, i work around state policy. we have a lot to do to build up trust between the state and the federal government. there's been a lot of mixed messaging from both administration's. and in the states at the beginning of the pandemic felt like they were forced to lead the way and they
