a cdc advisory panel is expected to take on booster shots next week. they'll be looking at the extra shots for those who are older in nursing homes and frontline workers in washington. lauren blanchard, fox news. and earlier this evening we spoke with dr bernice saying clinical professor at stanford to get her thoughts about today's decision by the fda advisory panel. she said she believes that the panel made the right call. i'm not surprised that there was an approval, but i think it probably surprised some people that the approval wasn't broader for the greater population. i must say that i think the fda took the right, cautious step because ultimately the public is reliant on the fda and our scientific trials. the trial that they were looking at what was the fighter trial, which was only, uh, looking at 300 people. after seeing by the way is also the former chief medical officer with the department of health and human services. a new poll shows governor newsom holding big early leads in next year's gubernatorial election in the berkeley igs poll. ne

today was just the advisory panel, and the fda isn't required to accept the advisory panel's recommendationst next week, and then we will get a cdc decision on this matter. so we'll see what happens from here, but in terms of why the expectations in the media today were so different than public health experts' expectations, i'm interested in that. i'm also interested in how well supported by the data these decisions today were. i know just the person to ask. joining us is dr. ashish jha. thank you for making time tonight. i appreciate you being here. >> hello, rachel. thanks for having me back. >> is it correct to say that these decisions today were sort of broadly expected in the public health community even if in a lot of the media they were treated as very surprising developments? >> absolutely. you have got that completely right. i think all of us predicted this is exactly what would happen because we've all been looking at the science and we've been looking at the data. the data for high-risk people, for people over 65 is clear. we expected the fda advisory committee to say as much. the

collins, is the advisory panel right?w agree with them on this limited booster program over what the president was proposing last month, the general population getting boosters which he said was based on advice from his medical experts including you? >> you know, chris, i think there's less difference between where we were in the middle of august and what the advisory committee said this past friday. they did encourage and vote for the administration of boosters to people over 65 and those at high risk of exposure. those are the people who would be most likely to reach that eight month period because that's how we prioritized initial immunizations back in january. so i don't think there's huge differences here. i think the big news is that they actually did approve the initiation of boosters and remember, they're taking a snapshot of right now. we're going to see what happens in the coming weeks. it would surprise me if it does not become clear over the next few weeks that that administration of boosters may need to be en

has the fda advisory panel voted on this second recommendation? or are they just discussing it?ctually not exactly sure. i know that this was under discussion. i don't know if the exact vote has happened, but this is in process, all of this is going on as we speak. but we are not surprised that they brought this back as an age-related item. in other words, before pfizer was saying we want to give boosters to everyone 16 and older, and they got a lot of persistence to that. the advisers said, wait a second, if you're under age 60, 65 or so, do you really need a booster? you're probably fine with just those two shots. you could say younger people need to have boosters as well because then they won't get infected and spread it to older people. but that argument's a little bit harder to make. it is relatively easy to make the argument, especially with the israeli data in hand saying, look, when israel gave boosters to older people, those older people tended to end up in the hospital less. so, this is being considered by the committee. i don't know that we have a vote in yet. >> we'r

so actually, we can back up a little bit more and say there's an advisory panel to the fda. ed for the booster shot. there's the regulatory authorization they did on wednesday and the advisory committee on immunization the liberties and advises me who they believe the booster should be recommended for. that was the panel that met on wednesday and thursday. they're about four votes, and some of them were unanimous, and the one that i believe you're referring to was a split vote. >> okay. i don't want to get to processy, but i think it's part of the confusion because it's, like, what is their task? are they looking at the data? are they making a policy judgment based on costs and benefits? what's going into the thinking of that advisory board and then into your judgments? >> they pored over the data for two days. they looked at vaccine effectiveness and how it was doing, was there waning, how much waning was leading to hospitalizations. they look at feasibility. they look at the safety data and take all those data together and make a recommendation based on a vote. >> okay. so

the city six advisory panel said data showing waning protection among older adults prompted their decision on thursday, the panel said the fighter booster should be made available for people 65 older people in nursing homes and those 18 to 64 with health problems that put them at high risk for covid-19. in california about 6.5 million people are 65 or older, and the state's health secretary says they're prepared to start boosters once the cdc guidelines come out for the 18 to 64 high risk group. we could see roughly 170 anywhere up to 250,000 californians in these. different categories coming forward to get that additional shot. there's some details that we still need to understand. for example, who are the high risk people that will actually qualify to get that booster? dr. michael stacy, chief medical officer for lifelong medical care community clinics, says once the cdc's issues guidelines, they'll be ready to give out doses. some say they want a third dose as soon as possible. i really want to do it. i'm a run children. my grandchildren. your ego avara of richmond says he's a covid sur
