well, thank you and thanks to dani and aei for having us. just to give you an idea of what i thought i would try to do this morning, i'm going to start with some questions about 9/11 specifically and push you in particular about your personal views on these things because i know you love to kind of put yours on the couch -- yourself on the couch. [laughter] public self-reflection. [laughter] and then i'm going to go and talk about a number of different ways in which the policies that emanated from 9/11 that you, i think, in large part helped to drive and try to fill in some gaps. i've spent a lot of time looking at the interviews that you've done since the book came out, i've read it now, twice, and some questions that i have remaining for you. i think that's how i'd like to proceed, and then as dani mentioned, we'll throw it open for additional questions that will probably be much better than mine. so i thought the first place we would start is on the morning of 9/11. i would be interested to know when you first knew we were under attack. n

. >> >> i am with aei and president bush, in his memoir which does not purport to cover the whole administration does not cover 2003 through 2006 so would you say about the criticism the president was insufficient name monitoring his generals and not be eliciting early enough or as early as desirable for that to strategy? could that have been done earlier? >> i am inclined, first of all,, what i remember is the president was heavily engaged during that period of time and not ignoring what was going on. with operations in iraq. we had fairly regular sessions and to hook up to baghdad not only with our senior people but also iraqis. a picture that i put it in my book of rumsfeld, rice and die at camp david it does that show the president because he is on the other end in baghdad and rehab day secure hook up he has gone into have an important session with prime minister al-maliki. the notion he turned his back on our was not focused or was not engaged i would challenge that. i don't think it is true. >> let me take the prerogative to bring this back to 9/11. you make the case it change the governme

i came here to aei about twoweae years ago and spoke on this subject. but all of those activities were investigated cut of hadan been done before. >> put the obama administration, i think all our hopes that this fra resolve's but they did noteast deserve to be decorated for the work that they did to shave -- save many lives. here in 2009 it was a critique of the decision of the sings the you mentioned but also a warning by stepping back from the kinds of things that your administration had then toti say we are choosing to put, a ourselves at greater risk but yet to hear we are committed to in a half years later. of course, if the attack at fort hood but in spite of allee those things, we have not been attacked again. osama bin laden has been killed, this her leaders have been taken out and success on al s qaeda sentral theic pakistan and afghanistan by most accounts has been decimated fourth survey taken apart. were you wrong when you made those warnings may 2009? >> i don't think so. i would argue the policies we put in place back in p b i those days t

organizations like adc, aei and so forth should really pay more attention -- more resources to address what's going on in the horn of africa, northeast africa and morocco and so forth, the gulf. unless this happens, the ability to encompass and bring in and give true voice and membership to other americans is not going to be had. i have two minutes so i'm going to rush really quick and i can address these other points during the question and answer period but i finally have a piece that addresses in the handbook that you have that addresses arab-american legal identity. in post-9/11 community the arab-americans haven't done the necessary work to really refine and to solidify what it means to be an arab-american. and even though that conflicts with other social and political issues on the ground. we've been marginalized as being anything but white and having access to white privilege and a lot of energy and work and research needs to be had to finalize and refine what it truly means to be arab-american. i'm going to stop now but i'll be glad to field any questions you may have about the
