today's gathering is part of a large and ambitious project for us here at aei. and i want to say just a few words about it before we get started. 20, 26, two years from now, will mark the 250th anniversary of the american founding. a lot of organizations are going to find ways to recognize that milestone in a variety of ways. but in thinking through what kind of distinct contribution we might be able to make, in particular, we thought that we should produce something of a lasting intellectual product through a set of conferences that then will yield a set of books and educational materials. beyond that, explore how americans now should understand some of the key themes and questions at issue in our country's founding. those materials can outlast the anniversary, can serve educators and students and citizens for many years to come. and to do that, they'll draw on scholars from a variety of fields with a diversity of viewpoints to offer americans some wisdom about our civic and political inheritance. and so, over the course of more than two years, we're hosting ei
