i'm joined now by lord best, chair of the affordable housing commission, and former leader of thejosephearlier. it is good to have you with us. when we look at the scale of the housing challenge, do you detect that the political will is there to devote the kind of resources needed to meet this challenge? well, government is trying to respond. it allowed councils once again to build counselling housing, which is a very good thing, they have been allowed to borrow as much as they can to build some more. that is going to ta ke build some more. that is going to take some time. leaving everything to the house—builders is not going to the house—builders is not going to work, they only build out as fast as they can keep the prices up. do not rely on them. the housing associations, we want to see them doing a lot more, they sort of stand between the private and the public sector. i think people want something to be done, but it is going to cost to build all the homes that we need and to build them on an affordable basis so people can actually afford to buy them or read them, it is going to cost

office of housing to deposit fees from the north of market fees into the city affordable housing fund ana and the plannig commission recommended the fee get in decked since it -- indexed since it has not been done since created. there is one fee forthcoming. because we did not actually make the amendment in committee last time we were here, the legislation was sent back. since then the planning department has gotten clarification that they are able to index. they have existing authorization to index the fee starting in 2011. the planning department can speak to that directly. we have spoken to supervisor haney's office and understand this approach of indexing the fee from 2011 is a reasonable approach, and that is why we are seeking to change the legislation back to the initial $5 per square feet fee amount. planning will automatically apply to indexing from 2011 forward. my colleague is here from planning if you have questions how they have that existing authority and are able to do that. >> is it meroln. >> ne? >> are there any members of the public who would like to speak on this item. >> thank you. i brought th

affordable housing fund. you heard this back june 13, of last year and recommended approval. the first time it was heard at the land use committee, the committee did not index the fee per the planning commission's recommendation, however, at the full board, commission haney indexed the fee and sent back to land use. the planning department clarified it only authorized them to index the fee beginning in 2011, and we can do that automatically. therefore, this hearing -- the this hearing, the proposed $25 fee was reverted back to the $5 fee. in the end, they'll be charged $7 and odd cents. steve vettel representative for the project sponsor gave public comment about the hearing expressing concern about the increased fees in the area and making projects infeasible. the committee did accept the amendment and sent the item to the full board with a positive recommendation. lastly, the ordinance authorizing interim activities at develop sites was back in land use this week. they were rehearing the item to the planning commission recommendation to require applicants to have a project to increase residential density only if the land contains a residence. they continued that for one week because the amend
